Dining in Grand Canyon & Sedona

Looking for recommendations for dining in Grand Canyon south rim & Sedona.

We have reservations for El Tovar for now, but are considering cancelling them based on some posts I have read on the site.

We are staying at the new Hyatt Pinon Point in sedona, which has no restaurant, and need a nearby place with great food and/or views for dinner. Keep hearing Thai Spices is a nice small place for good cheap food, but we are willing to go to a place that is slightly more upscale if its recommended.

any ideas?

I recommend to keep your reservation for El Trovar; you can always cancel it when you get there if you change your mind, but getting another one may be difficult. We had a good dinner there; not great (given the price), but we enjoyed the atmosphere. There's alot of history to the El Trovar. The Arizona Room is also right on the rim; the food is better at the Arizona Room but the atmosphere is much better at El Trovar; atmosphere is nothing special at Arizona Room. Also, the Arizona Room doesn't take reservations and depending on when you go, the wait can be very long. If you end up eating dinner at the Arizona Room, then you can go to El Trovar for breakfast (get there early to avoid long wait). There's also a nice restaurant for breakfast in the Bright Angel lodge.

In Sedona, if you're looking for a great setting (very romantic and upscale), I would highly recommend dinner at the Enchantment Lodge in the Yavapai Room. The food is excellent, although quite pricey. Go when still light out (i.e, at dusk) as the setting in Boynton Canyon is spectacular ... You'll be glad you went.

I like Shugrue's Hillside Cafe in Sedona (they have a website). Great views as you are up on a hillside, overlooking red rocks, and you can dine outside if you want. Nice new american cuisine; not incredibly fancy but nice/casual and always reliable for good food and service.
I have had different expereinces than Effoc12 at the Yavapai Rm at Enchantment. My party of 3 was treated very poorly and we won't return. Very expensive- they shouldn't have been rude to us when you are paying that much (and we were staying there that night too).

I wouldn't cancel at the El Tovar. I think the atmosphere is wonderful and our meals have always been just fine.

I would not cancel El Tovar either, we liked it very much. We even had a TV in our room. They have a nice coffee and tea bar set up for early sunrise watchers. The restaurant was very good for a N. park restaurant IMO.

We just came back from the Grand Canyon and Sedona. We did have dinner at El Tovar. As others said, it was good - not great. Breakfast was actually very good. I'm not sure where else there is up there that is good.

Our favorite dinner in Sedona was probably at Rene's. I did hear that Thai Spice was good. Also El Richon (southwestern). I think they are all located in the Tlaquepaque market place (or whatever they call that shopping area).

Yavapai Room at Enchantment is only worth it on a gorgeous evening when the view is visible. We ate there 3 weeks ago when it was raining and there was no view, and it was good but not great for the expensive price.

Stayed at Hyatt too. Breakfast at the Sedona Airport was a great choice for us, delicous and a nice drive/view.

Thanks for the great information everyone.

I will keep my reservations at El Tovar, it seems as though even if the food is good and not great it will be worth it having reservations and not wasting any time waiting.

For Sedona I am seriously considering Shugrue's Hillside Cafe. It looks nice and isnt too expensive. Heartline Cafe come's up a lot, as well as Thai Spices. May do lunch there.

Thanks again, keep the advice coming.

I live in Sedona and definately recommend Shugrues Hillside for views and the best food. They have a patio dining and live music every evening. A tad pricey but well worth it. Thai Spices is ok but no nice view and a little grungy for me. Also try Javelina Cantina for fun Mexican food with a good view also.
