Detroit for the Ryder Cup
A buddy and I are heading over to the US for the Ryder Cup in September '04. It takes place in Detroit (Bloomfields ?).
Where would people recommend staying for convenience to that area and also for some nightlife and restaurants.

The Ryder Cup takes place in Bloomfield Hills, which is about 25 miles northwest of Detroit. There are plenty of hotel options within an easy drive, but that area is quite affluent and is not known for nightlife. Basing yourself in nearby Birmingham could be a good solution. Birmingham is an upscale suburb with an active, walkable downtown. It's also a quick drive to Royal Oak and Ferndale, which don't have any decent hotels but have great restaurants, shopping and nightlife (and are much more funky than blueblood Birmingham). We are booked at the Hampton Inn in
Southfield, MI for the Ryder Cup. How far would you say this is from the tournament sight? It seems to be located near a "main road" which leads straight up to Bloomfield Hills. Would you consider this a good location to be based out of in order to enjoy the tournament and also have some nicer restaurants to visit at night without a long drive? Would a hotel in Troy be a better choice? Thanks for any advice you offer.

Well, I think it's really a crapshoot between the two and depends on your interests. They both are real office-space oriented w/ lots of those type buildings in the area. In Troy's favor, you have the fact that it's closer to Royal Oak which as stated before has a great nightlife w/ bars and restaurants all within walking distance of one another. Southfield, on the other hand, doesn't have much of a nightlife, but there are some good restaurants nearby. There is a thread on this website referencing that.
If you do decide to head to Troy, I recommend the Troy Marriott.

The Northfield Hilton is in a fine area. Troy is a nice suburb of Detroit. There is a Charlies' Crab and The Palm restaurants nearby. It is about 25 minutes or so (depending on the traffic) to Royal Oak and Birmingham. Also in Troy are the Somerset Inn and the Troy Marriott. Also very nice and again about 20 minutes to Birmingham and Royal Oak. The latter hotels are very near the Somerset Collection (an upscale mall with nice restaurant choices, as well).
