"Destination Paradise": The Philadelphia Flower Show
Granted, I wasn't seeing too clearly when I left it at 3:30 this morning, but the Flower Show this year is pretty gasp-inducing.
You enter into towering palm trees and loads of orchid plants (over 100,000 orchid blooms) and continue on to undersea cacti and a floral extravaganza with angels assembling wings and giving halos. There are exhibits of gardens that make anyone with half a gardening yen drool, and parties that look wonderful to attend.
And all this started as bare concrete floors about a week ago!
If you do go, I strongly suggest using public transportation; the Septa regional rail lines stop at Market East, right at the Convention Center. The profits go to a worthy cause, Philadelphia Green.
The best time to go is around 4 to 6pm, although there are generally crowds at all times, it must be admitted.
(Reading this over, I'm afraid it sounds like an ad. I'm only a volunteer who gets her hands dirty for the sake of this magical show, but I just had to talk about it. If you've never seen it--try to!)

The crowds can be pretty gasp inducing too! Although it's always busy, visiting during an "off peak" time really helps the enjoyment of the show.
One of my favorite exhibits was a few years ago and featured an outdoor winter garden. It gave me some great ideas on how a garden can still be beautiful even without flowers and leaves on trees.

Just returned from the Philadelphia Flower Show. It is truly amazing this year. My favorite was an undersea theme with cacti that looks like corals and sea cucumbers and anemones. Very innovative ideas. If you are an orchid fan, you won't be disappointed. The number of orchid plants on display was staggering.
Very glad that I went!
