Destin/ Tandoori girl
I see you know Florida very well. We are going to Sandestin resort the last week of April.
What I was wondering was, if we find ourselves with a couple days of rain while there, so our vacation isn't wasted indoors, can you suggest a short day trip not far from there, any direction, where it may not be raining that would be interesting for us and our 9YO daughter?
We don't mind if we have to spend the night away from Sandestin and go back the next day, so it would be ok if it was 2-21/2 hours away.
Thanks for any help you or others can give.

Yikes. A day trip from Destin is no small feat as there is not much up that way for tourists. If it's raining in Destin, it will be raining in Seaside, and there's hardly anything in Seaside anyway. Downtown Pensacola might be worth looking into if it's not still a mess from the hurricanes. Appalachicola is interesting but I just don't know what to recommend that your 9 y.o. daughter would enjoy, except a mall and there are plenty of those. Honestly, I don't think you will get any rain the last week of April anyway. We get summer showers mostly beginning in June. Let's just keep our fingers crossed. And locate the movie theatres when you go to Destin. An afternoon movie would be fun.

My mom and dad had a 2 day rain once and drove to New Orleans, spent the day and night, and part of the next day, and came back by dinnertime.
Of course Nola is not where I want to go with my daughter.
Thanks for thhe suggestions~

Spyro, that is too funny because I was thinking of recommending that! ha. You are 5 hrs. from NOLA and of course that's not what you should do. I really don't think you'll have a problem with rain. I've not been to that Naval air museum that Fairhope recommends. That's about your only option. If you decide to drive either way be sure to check that you're not just driving into the rain (which tends to come from the west). Have a great time in Destin, a very pretty place.

You can always do what everybody else does in Destin when it rains-go to the outlet mall. There is also a very nice outdoor mall behind the Bass Pro Shop-can't recall the name of it at the moment.
A sight seeing trip along hwy. 30A (Seaside, Watercolor, Grayton Beach, Rosemary beach etc.) might be fun. In fact, I would recommend doing this even if it doesn't rain. Seaside is where the Jim Carey movie, Truman was filmed. Panama City beach is nearby with shopping, movies etc.
I don't know if Pensacola would be much fun unless you want to see the results of last fall's hurricane. There are still many unrepaired building and damage.
Be warned. When it rains in Destin, the traffic becomes horrendous (by Destin standards) with everybody looking for something to do. And most of them are going to the outlet mall!
But, as Tandoori girl said, you probably won't encounter much rain. April is historically one of the drier months in the panhandle. And if it does rain, it shouldn't last more than an hour or so.
New Orleans is a long drive, but contrary to popular belief, there are some great things there for children. There is the Audubon zoo (you can take a boat from the French Quarter to get there) The Aquarium of the Americas is very impressive and in the day time the French Quarter is fine for children. My kids loved New Orleans when they were young.
