Denver to Aspen drive how long?
Hi,I'll be in Colorado in mid Sept.and would like to know how long it takes to drive from Denver Airport to Aspen? Is the fastest route a senic one? I am a very experienced mountian driver I have driven in most of the Swiss Alps etc.If anyone can suggest a route that would be great. Thanks Macy

The fastest way is I 70 to Glenwood Springs, then 24 to Aspen. For an interstate, I 70 is pretty scenic, particularly after you pass thru the tunnel. The other way is more scenic but is A LOT longer. Take I 70 to Vail, take 24 to 82. 82 takes you over the mountains and into Aspen from the south. It is very, very scenic, but make sure the road is open. it is closed more often than not because of snow.

I have done both routes, but several years ago. I agree with the above, the scenic route is slower, but worth it. Seems like that way it took me four hours, but it was in november, right before the pass would close for the winter, and there was a little snow.

Either drive would take about 3 & 1/2 to 4 hrs. I think I-70 really is rather scenic esp. if you've never travelled it through the rockies, and esp. around Glenwood Springs, the Glenwood Canyon part of the highway is really beautiful, the highway was built to blend in with the canyon geography.
The drive from Glenw. Springs to Aspen via 82 isn't as pretty, but considering that there are pretty much mountain views anywhere you look at all times on all routes, you can't go wrong.
You can also take I-70 to Copper Mountain and then go south on the highway there (can't remember the name of the highway, but it leads to Leadville.) That route takes you over Independence Pass into Aspen which is beautiful and a little treacherous. I don't think there is any need for mountain driving experience (whatever that is) just a lack of fear of heights and driving near the edge of a drop off which there are several of on Indep. Pass. I've never considered that drive really scary, just beautiful. There are a few portions of it where it's almost one lane, so be careful there.
Enjoy!
