DC trip during Thanskgiving?

I hope you can help me. My Mother (73 & very agile for her age) & Father(78 & fairly agile) want me to go with them to Washington, DC over the Thanksgiving Holidays.
Is this a good/bad time to visit DC? Are the monuments, museums and other places of interest open during these holidays? My parents insist on driving to DC-- they travel all over the U.S. and do fine. However, from earlier posts it seems we shouldn't try to drive IN DC. So once we arrive, we'll probably park and take public transportation.
Is it possible to find a suite for around $150.? What areas would you suggest or avoid, considering my parents age? They don't care about room service or those type of amenities, but want safe, clean, for a decent price. Are we asking too much for $150.00?

Everything is open over Thanksgiving, but as you might expect, it will be crowded as it's a holiday weekend. I think $150 for a suite in downtown is probably unrealistic. You might find something in the close-in suburbs. Wherever you go, check out its distance to the Metro--that will be the easiest way to get around when you don't want to walk or if you do stay in the burbs. There have been other postings on less-expensive lodgings in the area that you can probably find through a search.

Should have added that taxi fares are pretty reasonable in the District, so you might want to spend extra money to stay downtown so you can grab a cab when your folks get tired.

My husband and I spend a couple of days in DC just after Thanksgiving every year, and we have never found it to be too crowded to be enjoyable. In fact, it's less crowded than when we have been to DC in the spring or summer.

I'm not sure what you had in mind by a suite hotel, but we always stay at the New Hampshire Suites Hotel, not far from Dupont Circle. Some of the suites have a sofa bed in the sitting area, so you could sleep three, and there is a small kitchenette area. This hotel includes a substantial continental breakfast, and we have never paid more than $100 for our suite. In fact, last Thanksgiving, by booking on the website, we paid only $59. We've been staying there for years, and really like the hotel. I don't know if the website price will be that good again, but I can give you the site if you're interested.

Cheryl, yes, I would like the web site. Thank you. What I am looking for is accomodations with two double beds, and a sleeper sofa, or two twins and a sleeper sofa, or a King and a sleeper sofa. A separate sleeping/living area, coffee maker, mini-fridge and microwave would be nice, but are not a necessity. We definitely don't need two bathrooms.
We would prefer a suite to getting two separate rooms.

Jeannie-

The website is http://washingtondchotel.com/
The hotel is the Best Western New Hampshire Suites, and it's a couple of blocks from Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom Metro stops. The website doesn't seem to book more than a couple of months in advance, so last year I made a reservation for the hotel through 1-800-VISITDC, a consolidator, and then I cancelled that reservation when the website had a better price. Either way, I've never paid over $100, and the breakfast (bagels, cereal, toast, danish, coffee and juice) makes it a great bargain.

Last night, I did a search of Washington DC threads for the past two years, and found so much useful information. Thank you to all who have posted in the past!
We have decided to stay at an Embassy Suites, mainly because my Father enjoys the stay there. I realize that the 22nd street location would be the most convenient to most of the sights we want to visist, but the rooms are more than we want to pay. Unless we can find some deal, we'll limit our choice to one of the following Embassy Suites locations: Tyson's Corner, Chevy Chase, Crystal City, and Alexandria/Old Town. We found the lowest rate at Tyson's Corner, then increasing in the order above. Can anyone stayed at these locations? Any useful advice to help us narrow our choices. Thanks again.

Tyson's Corner is a suburban edge city with very little public transportation and terrible traffic. Crystal City is on the Metro line and would be the most convenient to the Mall and museums.

The one at Alexandria is right at the Metro station.

The one at Chevy Chase is at the Friendship Heights Metro. Lovely area, but probably not my first choice, because you are maybe 8-10 stops out on the metro before you are near the monuments. Not too many restaurants there, either, but probably enough to get by. Exceptionally safe area, though. If you stay there, you'll probably want to dine elsewhere.

Jeannie, I would highly recommend the St. James Hotel, which is in your price range and about a block from the Foggy Bottom metro. The suite we stayed in there had a room with two double beds
and a living room with a queen-size pull-out sofa. There was one big bathroom, with access from both the living room and bedroom, and a full kitchen with fridge, micro, sink, dishwasher, and stove. The accomodations
were very pleasant, newly renovated, and
spacious enough for four people. Continental breakfast is included. Another thing we liked about the location, besides its convenience to the metro, was that it was walking distance to some good restaurants. We did our sight-seeing during the day, rested in the room in the late afternoon, and then took a stroll for dinner. Legal Seafoods is nearby and a great place, and we had
a good Thai meal in the neighborhood, too. Have fun!
