DC to Harrisonburg- need good hike

My daughter and I are flying into DC July 6th, registering at JMU on the 7th and then returning to DC for the weekend. We arrive early on the 6th and are renting a car, and I wanted to find a good hike (no hiking boots required, as we are not checking luggage) that we can do on the way. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

https://www.nps.gov/shen/index.htm

Hikes listed here under Planning Your Visit/Activities.

Keeps abreast of the weather. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the summer.

Check out Great Falls of the Potomac, not very far from DC, nice path along the canal.

Can anyone tell me if we need hiking shoes, as opposed to regular running shoes, for any of the following:

Old Rag
Little Devil Stairs
Overall Run Falls
Jones Run Falls
Falls of the Doyle River

We were trying to avoid checking luggage, so might need to avoid the ones that require us to pack an extra set of shoes!

I've done Old Rag and I wouldn't do it regular running shoes.

The link I provided has ratings and parameters for all of the hikes you've listed. You know your strengths and limitations better than anyone here.

Consider shipping your hiking shoes so you don't have to check luggage? Where are you staying the first night?
