Day trips from Syracuse

DH and I will be bringing our son to college in late August. We plan to stay 4 days, but don't expect we'll be with our son, or on campus, the whole time. Can you suggest some interesting day trips in that area? We like pretty scenery, history, good wine and good food.

Would also love your recommendations for overnight trips in the area, so in the future DH and I can combine visits to our son with a little vacation for ourselves.

Thanks.

You are well within reach of several great daytrips... to the west less than 3 hours away is Niagara Falls, Niagara on the Lake, Buffalo, Letchworth State Park, ... South puts you into the Finger Lakes wine region with a dozen or so Lakeside destinations.... You might consider Cooperstown Baseball Hall, or even stay closer to Syracuse at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino... all of the above offer plenty of great food, scenic tours and barrels of wine and fun!

There are two other sports halls of fame nearby baseball: boxing & soccer.

Here's the link you want to use when planning your wine tasting:

If you are heading to Niagara Falls you will probably want your passports along as the best viewing is in Canada (beware - at times it can be a very lengthy border crossing).

wliwl, ate at the Dinosaur BBQ when my son and I were in Syracuse last month. Loved it, food, atmosphere and all! We also ate at Phoebe's and PJ's Pub. What struck me most is how NICE everyone is. Maybe I was just predisposed to like the area, knowing I'll be leaving my kid there for 4 years.

Do you have a favorite upscale restaurant in Syracuse? Loved the Armory Square area.

Hi Iregeo - - I actually live in Rochester, and don't go to Syracuse much, so I can't recommend anything else. I have lots of friends whose kids go to Syracuse and are very happy there. I even know one kid who transferred from a #1 ranked liberal arts college and is way happier at Syracuse.

Hope your son has a great 4 years. Bring a warm jacket. LOL
