It all depends on what you like to do. You could go to Freeport shopping and have lunch. Or you could go to Brunswick, home of Bowdoin College. I am partial to Brunswick and Bowdoin because my daughter graduated from there. Outside of Brunswick, there is Harpswell, Baileys & Orr's Islands, connected to the mainland by a small causeway. Beautiful scenery, quiet, and delicious seafood.

Take one of the mailboat cruises. They are actual freight-mail- commuter boats that visit many of the Casco Bay Islands but are affordably priced compared to "tour boats". The longest route goes all the way to Bailey's Island, where you can have a lobster lunch before returning.

The White Mountains are within easy day trip range.

Ogunquit for it's beautiful beach, Boothbay Harbor, Camden or Rockport, The Coastal Botanical Gardens in Boothbay to name a few. You can take a sailboat cruise from Boothbay or Camden, both are charming seaside towns. All will be crowded in August.

I think it's a 2 hour drive to Rockland where you can visit the Farnsworth Museum (my choice) or Owl's Head Transportation Museum (DH's choice). Lunch would be steamed lobster at Waterman's Beach and also take the short hike to Owls Head Light.

Agree with the mailboat cruise. If you take the first one in the morning, there's lots of people headed out to work on one of the islands. You'll be back in time for lunch in the Old Port Area. It's fun to explore: MDI ice cream on Exchange St, Two Fat Cats Bakery whoopie pies, Duckfat French fries.

You can take a nice hike around the park in South Portland where Portland Light is located. Get a lobster roll at Bite Into Maine food truck that parks there. Enjoy the view of Casco Bay.

Also agree with exploring Harpswells area. Get the list of public trails like the Giant Steps. Lobster place in Cundy Harbor is wonderful. Lots of choices for dining.

Also agree with Ackislander about White Mountains. You could do a loop across Kancamagus Hwy and back via Meredith, Center Sandwich and Tamworth to Rt 16 south of Conway. But since you only have a few nights, I would concentrate on Maine.
