Day Trip To Bushkill Falls, PA
On Sunday we decided to take a trip to Bushkill Falls, PA from NJ as our warm up for the bigger Niagara Falls trip later in August.
My wife, 20 month old daughter and myself left our house in Union NJ around 12 Noon, strictly following the website directions off of www.visitbushkillfalls.com, the ride as per the directions took us over 3 hours. If you are coming from that direction you are better off going through the Delaware Water Gap, we came back that way and it only took us 2 hours.
Even though it was a very hot day we enjoyed it very much, Bushkill Falls are located in the Pocono Mountains so the air is a bit cooler and fresher. There are many activities you can do there, boating, hiking, fishing and more, we even saw bumper boats on our way down which looked like a lot of fun. We, however decided just to go visit the falls, we paid the entrance fee ($9 per adult, our daughter got in free) and walked inside. At the entrance you walk through a room with an array of stuffed animals which our daughter simply loved, and you receive a map of the various trails. Mind you, the hike to the falls is steep, they don’t allow any strollers in so be ready to carry the kids. At first we thought that since we have time we’ll do the long trail (about 1 – 1 ½ hours), but after 10 minutes with our daughter stopping at every twig that moved in the wind, not to mention her new “rock re-arranging” hobby she picked up from somewhere we found it to be an improbable task. We simply walked down to the bottom of the falls (again a steep staircase, but very beautiful and not very difficult) took some pictures, rested a bit, walked around, and started back up. This is where I got my exercise. After you exit the park there are a few refreshment stands, the obligatory “make airports look cheap for overpriced junk” store, and of course the fudge store. I’m proud to day we didn’t buy any junk food, just had some drinks, a pretzel among us, walked around a bit and back to the car. By that time it was almost 6 PM and we stopped at a small Italian place called Petruzzi’s (me thinks) right by the falls – not the best, but not the worst we had.
So, to sum up the trip:
- a great one day excursion from NJ
- take the Delaware Water Gap way
- Take the kids
- Leave the strollers
- Bring plenty of drinks
- You’ll leave hungry so plan on a late lunch / early dinner

We're from central PA and have made the trip to Bushkill three times -- definitely not for someone who's not in good shape physically. And, I don't know about you, but why do some women go to Bushkill wearing sandals or high heel shoes?!?! It's lovely in the fall - glad you enjoyed it!
