Day Trip from Chicago Suburbs with Kids
I'm looking for a day-trip (preferably no more than 2-3hrs one way) coming from the Chicago Suburbs this weekend for my and my three boys (ages 5-11) that would involve enjoying the great outdoors, but not be super crowded. No preference to Illinois, Wisconsin, Indian, or Michigan, I'm open to them all.
I love taking pictures so a location with scenery, especially a location with beautiful sunsets would be great. Something by the water would be ideal: lakes, ponds, or waterfalls. A location fit for biking would be good to know, but for this trip we need something to accommodate walking as one of the boys has a broken arm. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

I'm a native Cheese Head and have lived in the Chicago suburbs for 28 years. I second Devil's Lake, and we also have always enjoyed Indiana Dunes State Park. It's too cold to go in the water yet, but still pretty.

If you want to head south, Starved Rock State Park is nice. It makes me feel like I'm not in IL. You can pack a picnic, or there is a nice bar and grill with outdoor seating (plus dining room inside). Maybe for your next day trip?
