in/near Carmel. Vineyards/wineries, spas, shopping, Carmel Mission, great eating, galleries, etc.

A bit of the scenery near Carmel:

October is typically great weather on the coast.

San Jose, Oakland, SFO, or Monterey airports.

In/near Tahoe. Great scenery, spas, good restaurants

Eagle Falls & Emerald Bay http://static.travel.usnews.com/imag...merald_bay.jpg

October can be absolutely great weather . . . or not so much.

Reno or Sacramento airports

What great suggestions. One last question or concern. Do any of these places have close airports? Were fling from Is and don't want to drive much.

Des Moines to Albuquerque {ABQ} on Southwest or other airline and then it's about an hour to Santa Fe.

Also on Southwest from Des Moines, Sonoma is an hour from Oakland airport and just over an hour from either SFO or Sacramento, traffic willing of course (anywhere).

Can't argue with the Sonoma suggesstions but will throw in Charleston, SC and those surroundings and the beaches.

Here's another vote for Santa Fe. Lots of things meet your criteria and the weather should be fabulous.

This is a remote area of NC which is beautiful. It might hit you just right, and it also might not have all the things you want like good dining options.
If you are considering this as a possibility I would suggest Asheville instead. Stay at the Grove Park Inn with much to do in the surrounding area and great dining options.

Niagara on the Lake would be wonderful. My mom, sister and I used to make that our fall trip.

You could also visit Toronto for a day from that location.

You will need a passport or enhanced license to go to Canada
