Dallas, NOLA, Savannah, Vicksburg

Hello! My fiance and I are taking a road trip for our honeymoon. We will be staying in NOLA for 3 nights, Savannah for 4 nights and one night in Vicksburg to break up the drive home to Dallas.

I've done quite a bit of research but would love any suggestions for day trips from Savannah. (Tybee Island is already on the list.)

Also, any suggestions for must see/do/eat in either New Orleans or Savannah would be appreciated!

We are going at the end of June (I know it's a horrible time weather-wise, but we'll deal!)

Thank you!

If you enjoy beaches and/or history, you could drive to Jekyll Island for a day (or more). It's about 90 minutes from Savannah and you can tour the homes of the millionaires who built winter "cottages" there, shop in cute stores in the historic district and enjoy large, quiet beaches. You can also rent bikes for the excellent bike trails around the island, spend an afternoon at the waterpark, go fishing, go kayaking or try stand up paddleboards, etc.

If you haven't been to Charleston, it's beautiful and not too far from Savannah.

Well two of the days will be spent completely in the car on the way there. From Dallas to NOLA will take about 8 hours plus with various food/gas/ rest breaks and the same for NOLA to savannah.

What are you guys wanting to do interest wise? What is your budget? We have done NOLA on the cheap and also splurged a bit so be glad to help when i know your interests and budget.

I would invest the time and money in a walking tour of Savannah early so you can get a guage of what you want to do for the rest of the time. Also if you want food recs it might be time to start making reservations to a couple of the more upscale places. Sounds like two great cities to spend a honeymoon in minus the long drives in between

To me, New Orleans is about food and culture. I map out my eating plan and wander around listening to music and looking at art in between eating. Commander's Palace is a must for me. The strawberry shortcake is the best I've ever had. Cochon Butcher is an awesome sandwich place. I really like hanging out in Jackson Square talking to the artists and seeing the street performers. New Orleans is such a chill, fun place. Hope you enjoy your trip!

You are starting in NOLA--or are you starting in Dallas (home?).
I, of course, would choose Charleston over Savannah--more to do and enjoy leisurely without thinking about a day trip.

We are starting in Dallas. I realize the drives will be long, but we are up for that! Thank you for all the suggestions! We were planning to do a historic and/or food tour in Savannah on the first full day there to get a lay of the land. The only other planned thing in Savannah is a sunset dolphin cruise at Tybee Island.

I was thinking of checking out the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston as well. Any feedback on that?

We're not on a strict budget, but aren't looking to blow the bank either!

Thank you all for the help!

Since it is your honeymoon time I would suggest dependent upon your budget at least one upscale dinner in NOLA and also Old Pink House in Savannah. Also before you do anything in Savannah I would take a walking tour that will give you a great idea of what you want to do in the Historic District in Savannah. We used Savannah Rambles with Dirk based upon a rec from Fodors message board when we went two summers ago. Well worth the price and time. Also I would not stop for anything between Dallas and NOLA and just push thru. Maybe mind a hole in the wall place to eat or if you get on 1-10 eventually before Lafayette let me know because there are a couple of places that are worth stopping time dependent of course

WickedGood - would love some suggestions for stopping on the way to NOLA. Or anywhere along our route for that matter. We aren't on a strict time schedule!

Thank you!

With all there is to do in Charleston, the aquarium is a fun fill in for children, but would not be first on my list for young adults.

Gretchen -

We aren't so young - but thank you for assuming so! (We'll be 49 when we marry). However, I turn into a 5 year old anywhere near animals or sea creatures! LOL I think with all driving we will be doing, we may pass on a day trip - or at least play it by ear when we're in the moment!

If you have not been to Vicksburg before and are interested in History I would definitely recommend: http://www.nps.gov/vick/index.htm We also viewed the City Cemetery where all the Confederate troupes are buried.

As I said above, I'd pick Charleston over Savannah. The aquarium is not large. there is just so much to do and enjoy in Charleston.
