My favorite is Al's Smokehouse at 3317 Inwood with ribs and brisket being the specialties. www.bigalsbbq.com

Dallas is a fairly big town, you say you are driving 'through'...on 35? 75? 20? 30? I can give input, but I wouldn't spend an hour getting off track on your trip...so, give a vector!! Lots of great BBQ...google D Magazine best BBQ and you'll get a thorough listing, too.

Sonny Bryan's in the West End (downtown) Dallas -- or you could venture to the original on Inwood Road (off of I-35E)

We're coming in on 20 from Carlsbad NM--which Sonny Bryan's is the most convenient one since they have lots of locations?? Is Al's Smokehouse close to the 20??

i don't really know that area, but if you are driving straight thru on 20, you will be quite south of the heart of dallas...altho still urban area. do you have the 'yelp' ap on your phone? i do that alot to find local places. it has ratings too and ive never had an issue.

but if you want to take 35 from 20 into downtown dallas area, it might be fun to see the buildings and skyline up close...then sonny bryans in the west end would be closest.

Lockhart Smokehouse, 400 West Davis street in Oak Cliff, south part of dallas...has good ratings. ive never been there, but just put a search on yelp for you. not to throw a kink in your system, but fort worth's Angelo's is my favorite place for bbq around these parts!! good luck! i would still run a search on 'd magazine best bbq' and read all those reviews.

Here's a link from mapquest. It looks to be the West End location is closest to 20, but it's about 10 miles out of your way.

I have never been to Lockhart's, BUT it is in a fun area of Oak Cliff. Neat shops, good food (we like Hattie's) and really like Eno's Pizza and Hunky's Burgers and corn dogs.

I asked my husband about Lockhart's (all he's had there are the ribs) and he prefers Sonny's because they have really good onion rings!
