Dallas - Fort Worth Airport Hotels

We are returning to Australia from DFW on a very long 16 hour 20 minute DIRECT flight to Sydney in the near future.

Our flight will depart from Terminal D. We have decided on a connecting flight the day before so as to have over a day to see whatever we can of Dallas.

We would appreciate advice on which airport hotel to stay at.

Thanks for any advice with this.

I highly recommend the Grand Hyatt. It is quiet, has great service and a very nice on site restaurant.

We stay at the DFW Grand Hyatt often - it's located right inside Terminal D just steps away from one of the TSA checkpoints and almost all of the airlines have ticket counters in the same terminal. Very comfortable and quiet rooms and like cmcfong says a very nice on-site restaurant.

FYI - all the terminals are linked by a SkyTram that's inside the secure area (for those who's flights depart/arrive at a different terminal. There's also shuttle busses that will take you between terminals outside the secure area.

If the Grand Hyatt is booked you can stay at the DFW Hyatt Regency - on airport property but not in any of the terminals.units within a 5 to 15 minute drive from the airport.

If those hotel;s are out of your budget range almost all major hotel/motel chains have

Both Hyatts are at the airport, but only one is on the Skylink train. That's not really a big deal to me. You could choose either. But I wouldn't bother staying off-airport unless you can't afford one of the Hyatts (they're fairly expensive).

But if your purpose is to "see Dallas" realize that DFW isn't in Dallas. It's about 25 miles away, and you'd need to rent a car. That's certainly doable, but you may wish to look instead at things to do in Grapevine, which is much closer. There are several attractions there.

Oh ... I almost forgot. If you do rent a car, you should consider getting their prepaid tollpass even though it's a rip-off. There are a lot of electronic tolls in the Dallas area, and you might very well find yourself driving on a ride and can't avoid a toll. You pay a huge surcharge if you don't buy the tollpass from the car-rental company. Allow at least 45 minutes to get to the distant car-rental center and pick up your car.

If you're going to Dallas and not using the Dallas North Tollway or Bushpike, the likelihood that you'll need a tolltag is minimal. Just don't use the I-35 bypasses or the George Bush Turnpike. The toll charging highways are fairly obvious.

If you're going to the West End for the Book Depository (because: tourists, therefore the ineffable need to see where Oswald was when he shot Kennedy) and to the Arts District for . . . arts, there's no need for a tolltag. Highway 183 to Interstate 35E to downtown has no tolls.

If you wish to visit Dallas, your best bet is to have a car. The lone direct train option is slow because American cities that have installed light rail to their far-flung airports (Seattle, Dallas, Denver, others) insist on all-stop routes that take 45 minutes or so to reach downtown. Dallas is also spread out - it's physically larger than New York City by about 25% - although the West End to Arts District area is all within downtown; and as Doug mentioned above, the airport is not in Dallas. Technically it is not in Dallas County either.

Ultimately, you really don't need an airport hotel. Your flight leaves late in the night and anyplace you stay would be willing to hold your bags until you're ready to go to the airport. That said, the convenience of picking up your stuff from the DFW Grand Hyatt's concierge desk is understandable.

The Grand Hyatt is the only worthy option for us and well worth the premium. After paying outrageous prices for New York hotels, the Hyatts at DFW Airport appear relatively inexpensive.Thank you all for your comments. We will have some time for Grapevine and the sprawling Dallas-Fort Worth region, but will be a bit too tired to drive after 6+ weeks travelling around the globe

Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau offers shuttle service from the Grand Hyatt. Here's the link:

Also, Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) now has train service that will get you from the airport to downtown Dallas if you are interested in the JFK assassination Sixth Floor Museum or other sites downtown. Ask the hotel concierge for details.

With just one day, you might find Fort Worth more manageable and enjoyable. The downtown core is easily walkable, and it's more of a cowboy town, with related entertainment venues and historic sites, than cosmopolitan Dallas.

Fort Worth's two biggest attractions for visitors are its museum district and the Stockyards. Neither is downtown nor within walking distance of it nor accessible by any sort of convenient public transportation (the commuter train goes to . . . downtown FW). Dallas's downtown has its Arts District and all the areas that cater to morbid JFK curiosity. And the DART line goes to downtown Dallas . . . albeit slowly.
