Is there anything we should see in Dallas? I always wanted to see the school book depository and the area where Kennedy's assassination took place. It sounds morbid but I am interested in seeing it. Anything else anyone can suggest? And do we need a car if we stay in the heart of the city? Thanks! We'll be flying to San Antonio right after.

The Fifth Floor Museum is very well done and worth the visit.
Dallas Aquarium is excellent and also in the downtown area.
The Stockyards in Fort Worth are a Western-Cowboy district with great shops, restaurants, and a daily cattle drive.
I think you need a car, DFW airport is a distance from downtown. Are you flying out of DFW or Love Field? Northpark is your best bet for shopping. Galleria is 2nd best bet. I think Dallas has some of the best restaurants in the country. What are you hankerin for to eat?
It is the Sixth Floor Museum not the Fifth Floor Museum and absolutely go. it is very well done and worth going to. The Nasher museum of art is always very well done, it is large sculptures. Nasher owned Northpark Mall and also used to display some of his collection there.
Northpark is the best mall to visit, and I know going to a city to visit a mall may be unusual, but Dallas is the home of shopping and Northpark is its heart.

Sixth floor museum is very interesting, well worth a visit.
Dallas Museum of Art and Nasher Sculpture Center (right next door to one another) are both worth visiting.
Depending what time of year you're visiting, perhaps a trip to the Dallas Arboretum? The Spring blooms is fantastic.

Very laid back, very walkable downtown, a visit to the Stockyards is also a fun day. (Dallas is much more cosmopolitan, in my opinion.)
I live in the Dallas area and I wholeheartedly agree that the Sixth Floor Musuem is a wonderful place to visit. Not morbid at all. (Whenever I drive into Dallas, there are always people milling around on the lawn in front of "the spot" on the street.) I highly recommend the audio tour of the musuem. Extremely informative and emotional, without being maudlin:

I also agree that Northpark is my favorite mall in Dallas. So, if you are into shopping, that's the place to go.
Dallas does not have a robust transit system, in my viewpoint (as many here have said), so a car might be your better choice, especially if you only have a weekend.
The new Dallas Cowboys stadium is right off the Interstate (I-30) on your way from Dallas to Fort Worth. It is in Arlington and you would take the Collins Street exit. Head south (left) and it is about 1/2 mile, on your left. Can't miss it. They do tours, so check the website if you are interested. It is a beautiful facility. Awe-inspiring. (It is so huge, at night when it is lit up, we locals refer to it as "The Death Star". hahaha)

And I do highly recommend a trip to Fort Worth; it is only about 30 mts from downtown Dallas to downtown Fort Worth.
Fort Worth is a whole other ballgame.
