Dallas, Austin, Waco in February

I have the airline tickets flying to Love Field. I am going the beginning of February for 6 days/5 nights. It's primarily a trip to see my friend's grandkids who live in a Dallas suburb. One of the days will be spent attending a 7 year old's birthday party. That will be the highlight of the trip.

The rest of the time is ours. We have made plans to drive to Waco when we first arrive. We are taking a 6 AM Southwest flight from Midway Chicago so will get there pretty early. I need to re-read the rental car thread that was posted here, as I think there were some good recommendations and advisements there. The attraction in Waco is of course Chip and Joanna and the HGTV show Fixer Upper. I'm addicted to that show. I have read what they have done for the Waco economy and I guess we are determined to do what we can for it. Has anyone been there and any suggestions?? Nice lunch ideas?

We are looking at hotels in Dallas but probably just a Hampton Inn so I'm good there.

Austin plans are the LBJ Library and the capital. I'm on a kick about seeing state capital buildings so that's the only must see I have. Any other place I would regret not seeing or restaurant I really need to eat at?? (not over the top expensive, and I'm talking lunch here).

In Dallas I want to see the Kennedy sites. My friend has been to Dallas many times, so she's good with the sites but we could use good restaurant suggestions. Again, for lunch and mid price range would be appreciated.

When listing states I've been to I always say I've been to Texas. I'm kind of cheating because it was only a drive through in the far northern corner and I never got out of the car. I am excited and happy to really visit the Lone Star State. I hope the weather is good. My friend has mentioned the ice storms a few times that happen there. I'm from snow country, ice is another matter.

Thanks for any help.

I grew up in Waco and just got back from visiting my relatives there. There is a ton of great stuff to see and do in Waco, but since you are coming in February, you'll probably want to do mostly indoor things. (Although it could be warm enough for outdoor activities too.) Some of the excellent museums in Waco are: Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, Texas Sports Hall of Fame, Armstrong Browning Library, the Mayborn Museum Complex and even the Dr. Pepper Museum.

As for dining in Waco, there's lots of good local restaurants. I recommend going to George's Restaurant to have a Texas specialty--chicken fried steak. George's makes one of the best chicken fried steaks I have ever eaten (and I've eaten a lot!). The original George's on Speight Avenue has been around forever, and they just opened an additional restaurant on Hewitt Drive which my family enjoys.

Here are links to the Waco tourism website and the website for George's

Longhorn, thank you so much!! George's is exactly the kind of place I'm looking for. Yes to chicken fried steak. Now I'm excited. Those museums also sound great. The Dr Pepper museum? I'm there.

I loved Guero's Taco Bar in Austin (located on South Congress). We went back twice in one weekend.

lilyclaire, I have just been looking at Guero's website and it really fits the bill for what I'm looking for. My favorite cuisine, and I do love me a good margarita. I had to look at the dessert menu too, I see a few calling my name. Thank You.

Hey barbrn, any interest in a GTG or a mini-GTG in Austin? If there isn't time I understand but I like Guero's too.
