Cycling areas in Coastal Maine with visually impaired child

Greetings,

My family and I are planning a trip to visit my parents in Brunswick, Maine. We plan to drive north to spend a couple of days in Bar Harbor. Our 8 year old son is visually impaired, yet, still loves to ride his bike using what's left of his peripheral vision. I am seeking a place to take him to ride that is not overly busy with other tourists and safe from autos.

I have read some about the trails on Isleboro and am considering taking the kids there. Does anyone have any thoughts on this idea or other suggestions?

Thank you so much for any advice!

If you are going to Bar Harbor, you should look into the carriage paths in Acadia. There will be other people riding bikes, but cars are not allowed. If you set out earlier in the day, the bike traffic would be lighter than in the middle of the day. Also, I would think that you could check with the rangers at the park to find out which sections of the carriage paths are most popular, and avoid those.

The carriage trails might be perfect as they are nicely graded so he won't run into roots, rocks, etc. They are also wide. Some areas are more crowded than others, but it should be fine.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will definitely check out the less traveled carriage paths.
