Hello,
We'll be staying at Sylvan Lake Lodge for a week starting June 4 - we've arranged for a tour of the area, but was wondering of all the fabulous sites to see in the area - what would you recommend that we do not miss? Thanks for your help - we are so excited for this trip.

Ride up Needles Hwy gives you different view of Mt. Rushmore. If you like caves nearby are Jewel Cave National Monument and Wind Cave National Park. Badlands NationalPark also not too far as is the Crazy Horse Memorial.
Be sure to post a trip report, I'm going in Sept and would love your reactions/input.
But do a search on this site, there are a number of threads that I found while planning. Also, there is an article in Budget Travel in 2003. Go to Fodor's Budget Travel site and do a search for South Dakota and you should be able to find the article (there is a less helpful article published this year as well, so be sure to find the 2003 article as well).
Drive Iron Mountain Road US16A, You can get a different view of Mt Rushmore thru the tunnels. The WildLife Loop road and the Bison. Take a ride on the 1880 Train, Keystone-Hill City. The National Museum of Wood Carving in Custer on your way to Jewel Cave. The Mammoth Site - Hot Springs. A little to the south on SR71 the Wild Horse Sanctuary along the Cheyenne River. Drive the Spearfish Canyon Senic Byway US14A. Don't forget all the ohter places that were mentioned.
