Cowtown is actually a pretty good living history museum. There are reenactors there every day, although, probably more on weekends and for special events. Depending on when you will be in Wichita, there are a couple of things scheduled. May 3-4 is Blacksmithing weekend. May 11 is Mother's Day Celebration with buggy rides and live entertainment. This weekend falls during Wichita's biggest party, the River Festival. For more info go to www.old-cowtown.com and www.wichitafestivals.com My girls really enjoy Cowtown. They love sitting at the desks in the school bldg and pretending they are in school. They also like watching the saloon girls'show and going out to the farmhouse.
The Laura Ingalls homestead is in Independence, KS--about 3 hours southeast of Wichita. It is a nice thing to see if you are out that way, but Cowtown will give you a better idea of frontier life. Also on site at the Ingalls homestead are a one-room school house and post office (neither of which were anywhere nearby at the time the Ingalls lived there--they were just brought to the site as additional historic bldgs.) If your daughter is a big fan of Laura Ingalls, then by all means try to see it. Otherwise, save it for another time.
