Convention in New Orleans Need suggestions!

A bunch of us will be going to Convention in August in New Orleans. I have been reading the postings and am not sure where to stay now. Please help. We would like to stay near the convention center but accessable to the sites as well. Here are some choices we have been given...any good ones? Doubletree NO, Fairmont, Hampton Inn, Holiday in Downtown Superdome, Holiday Inn Select, Hotel International, Hyatt Regency, Iberville, LaQuinta Inn Downtown, Queen & Crescent, Wyndham Riverfront. We would prefer a nice clean hotel not too expensive so we can spend our money in the city. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Hi Heather:

I will be attending the same convention and I heard that Hotel Villa Convento (616 Ursuline St.)is a B&B in the French Quarter and on this site and other sites I have heard nothing but good things about them. Easily accessible to transportation. We have a loft room (1 king bed & 2 twin beds) upstairs and the price is right. Since it will be a bunch of you going maybe that B&B will be a consideration.

I live in N.O. so I don't know the prices of hotels. But I can tell you that the Holiday Inn Superdome and the Hyatt are not in walking distance to the convention center. You would need to take a cab or bus.

The doubletree and Wyndham are in walking distance.

Call the hotels and ask if they are in walking distance to the convention center, riverwalk and aquarium. That will put you in a good convient area.
If the Hilton, Windsor Court or Western Canal Place has rooms, their locations seem best to me, but they might be expensive.

Look at a map of the city so you can see the layout. You probably will want to be close the river, and French quarter. If you are close to the convention center but far from the French Quarter you can take the riverfront streetcar to the FQ for $1.25 each way or buy a visitor pass.

The Convention Center and the French Quarter really aren't that far apart. The two areas are just separated by a few blocks of the CBD which is really pretty narrow at that point. I live in the French Quarter, and I think the hotels near the Dome are within walking distance of the Convention Center (about 15 blocks or so), but some people may not consider that walking distance. I sold my car when I moved here, so I pretty much think everything is within walking distance - or easy to reach on the shuttle or in a cab. The French Quarter Shuttle has a stop on St. Charles about 4 blocks from the Dome and will take you directly to the Convention Center if you don't want to walk.

Of the hotels you listed, I'd suggest the Doubletree or the Wyndham. They are the best located for your purposes - and in August, you can probably get a good rate at these places.

I've done Sept conventions in New Orleans and will have another this year. Expect to carry a water bottle around. We used to think this was a Yuppie affectation until we spent a week in NOLA in early Sept. You will need it to survive the heat and humidity! Have a ball. It is a great town.

I am going to New Orleans for a convention in a couple of weeks. I have found the www.neworleans.com web site really helpful. It list all the hotels with picture and locations and tells how many blocks to each place you are wanting to be near

I would not stay at the doubletree. I stayed there last March. The hotel is very noisy (slamming doors all night) and the service was terrible. I've stayed at the Marriot on Canal St. and will be staying there again in June. It's close enough to the French Quarter and the convention center. The hotels near the Superdome and not within walking distance. The Sheraton is also nice.
