I am accompanying my husband to the Milford, CT area for a business trip the first weekend in October and we will have only the weekend to explore. Of course, the draw of beautiful foliage sounds like a must, but I would love any input on that area and which direction to head from Milford.
Must you move inland, like to the NW area, to see the colorful foliage or is it possible in the coastal areas? We don't mind driving some, but I don't want to spend my entire weekend on non-scenic roads simply heading from one destination spot to another.
Also any other must-see recommendations would be great.

We are just getting a little color in the maples this week. For lots of color you would need to go a bit north. I actually like the look of the green with the reds and golds before there is a lot of leaf drop, so for me the first weekend in October would be fine for leaf peeping, even along the shore.
As to must see things, that depends on what you enjoy. For maritime history, go to Mystic Seaport there also is a very good Aquarium in Mystic; for art museums, Atheneum in Hartford, any of the Yale art museums in New Haven, Museum of American Art in New Britain, Hillstead in Farmington, or one that escapes me in Lyme; there is a new science museum in Hartford; dinosaur park with footprints in Rocky Hill; house tours in several towns, Mark Twain house and Harriet Beecher Stowe house in Hartford. Then of course if you want to see over the top casios, go to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun. There also may be country fairs that weekend.
Check www.ctvisit.com for more ideas.
Suggest that you go to weather dot com, then click driving and fall foliage. You probably won't have any great color in Connecticut as early as Oct 3. You might happen on spots of bright color, but they'll be isolated.
