conflicting restaurant reports

I'll be in Boston in September, and will be traveling north in search of a good lobster roll. I read a lot of reports about some spots around Essex. However, the reports were all over the board. Any recommendations about a good lobster place in that area ? Don't want fancy, but good.

You posted in the Maine forum but I think you want Mass. No one agrees on the best lobster rolls. Some want lobster with melted butter, others with mayo. And then there's the meat, tail or claw or a mixture. Finely diced celery or not? Grilled bun? You get the picture.

Go to a good seafood restaurant, doesn't have to be fancy, and order the roll.

They are expensive and if you find a cheap one, it may be frozen lobster.

Generally in Boston, Neptune has one of the best. You can choose between mayo or butter. Some people love Belle Isle Seafood in Winthrop.

When I think of Essex and that area, I think of fried clams not lobster rolls.

cw- thanks so much. you are correct that I was assuming Maine. Been there a lot, so I associated lobster with Maine. I like my rolls with butter but no mayo. I'm thinking Belle Isle since Neptune seems fancy. However I want fresh lobster, so I guess I'll pay the price. Thanks again.

Neptune is expensive, but not really fancy.

My wife likes lobster rolls a lot. She likes the roll toasted with butter but with mayonnaise to bind the meat and just enough celery, finely chopped, for a bit of crunch.

I think the main thing is to look for places with enough volume that you aren't eating yesterday's claws.

I like lobster salad, hold the roll, myself. Add green scallion tops, with a side of potato chips.
