Columbia, SC dining?
In a few weeks, we will go to Columbia, SC to say goodbye to our DS who will be departing for Iraq. He will be at Ft. Jackson for training, prior to a brief stop at Ft. Bragg and then Iraq. (He's an officer in the Navy Reserves, but the Army is mobilizing him - joint forces and all). This seems to be the best time and place to catch up with him before his year-long adventure.
We have reservations at Marriott's TownePlace Suites and would like recommendations for Friday and Saturday dinner. We won't have a long visit, but we want it to be special (oh, and not too dressy - DS will want to be comfy).
Thank you.

Wow, that's big deal. I worked at Ft. Jackson a while back. We enjoyed Mr. Friendly's and Motor Supply.

Both have great food and aren't stuffy at all.
And do call Ft. Jackson ACS if you need help with logistics of the weekend. Thay can help you.
All the best to you. Please thank him for his service. And you take care.

I checked on the Greek restaurant that I liked when I was traveling in the area on a regular basis - but the reviews aren't that good recently. The last time I was there my nephew chose a <gasp> chain restaurant.
So, I'll join suewoo in thanking him for his service and have a great visit.

The Tea Room? We went there too and it was fine but I think the other 2 will make it more memorable. Having been through saying goodbye to a family member (he came back! He's fine!) and the Service Members with whom I spend my days, memorable is key.
I think Columbia is a nice town. It's not hard to find your way around.
Again, all my best.

Only meal I remember eating in Columbia, SC was at the IHOP on the SW corner of Senate and Assembly across the street from the SC Capitol Building. It is open 24 hours. I don't know how good or bad it is now. It was quite busy when I was there 6 years ago.

OK now I don't need my kleenex. Y'all are funny. But paris, I'm serious. No Waffle House or IOP unless he says that's what he want s. In that case, go with it. Thank goodness Iraq has calmed down.

Thank you for your suggestions and kind thoughts. Both Motor Supply and Mr. Friendly's look good. And if he wants, we can go to Waffle House for breakfast on Sunday AM.
We are happy that things are quieting down in Iraq. Suewoo, I'm glad that your loved one came back okay.

If you are looking for a nice restaurant, California Dreaming, near the Univ of SC campus might be the ticket. We have eaten there quite a few times and I attached the Yelp reviews. It is in an old train station and the atmosphere is nice, it isn't cheap. I can recommend the prime rib. Might make a nice farewell dinner.

I agree about Mr. Friendly's (despite its silly name) and California Dreaming (especially for the setting). 2 very different styles and atmospheres (the former small and local, the second large and a little corporate).

The responses are really appreciated. California Dreaming looks good - an we really like trains and old train stations... Anyplace where my son is will be beautiful this time of year, but I agree that SC should be good. We live in FL and he lives in the DC area, so we don't get to visit as much as we would like.

Paris,
What type of food does your son like? For Italian, there is Travinia's which is very good with a nice atmosphere. I like eating in the bar area since it is more "cozy" and they have great booths. Diane's on Devine, or Garibaldi in Five Points are all good. As previously said, Mr. Friendly's and Motor Supply are great too. While I love the food at California Dreaming, I find it way too loud to carry on a conversation. It is huge and the noise level is a bit much. Please thank your son for his service from me, I will pray for his safe return to you.
