I'm attending a conference in May in Portland. I'm only there for 4 days and I'm coming by plane so I won't have a rental car. Is there anyway to get to see the Gorge without renting a car? A day trip or public transit? Seems like a shame not to see it as I've heard such wonderful things about it. Its my first trip to Portland so I want to squeeze in whatever I can between the workshops!

New York-Texas Road Trip

No public transport I am aware of east of PDX. The Trimet Red line is just outside the baggage claim at the airport. Depending on your schedule, you could take the lightrail back out to the airport and rent a car for 4-5 hours to go see at least Multnomah Falls. Try to get at least to Hood River before sunset. Enjoy your trip. If you are stuck downtown at least make it to Powell's Books.
If you Google Columbia River Gorge tours you'll find several options that might work for you.
