Hubby and I are visiting newly transplanted kids in Denver mid May 2013. We are nearly fanatical fishermen .
Any suggestions as to stream fishing within couple hours drive of denver.
away from the crowds?
We like to use spinning and fly tackle.
Thanks,
Myjoe

Gunnison
There are all kinds of lakes and rivers and small streams within a couple to three+ hours of Denver. Just google and google away. Some are public - and others private - and/or guided.
There's also the Snake river. http://www.keystoneresort.com/activities/summer-activities.aspx He even is a member of a private lake by Vail - where they pull out some beauties.
Check out the opportunities around the Summit (two hours from Denver) - and the lake by Frisco - and also - around Keystone ski area. We had an AF Academy reunion at Keystone 7? years ago - and one of our classmates is also a fly fishing guide - and he took some of the lads - and some of the wives - to a little stream running through the grounds and they hooked up - and released - a few trout.
Here are a few outfits/places reviewed by Orvis - and our fly fishing club here in San Diego had a very nice slide show/presentation by a rep for the High Lonesome Ranch - near DeBuque - on the way toward Grand Junction. Very nice - with their own stocked pond for practice - and of course, many other opportunities on the grounds. http://www.thehighlonesomeranch.com/sporting-pursuits/fly-fishing/ Costs a bit but sure looked like it would be worth a splure.

Here's some information from the state of Colorado re: fishing. My uncle always fished the Poudre River and I've heard the area around Deckers (south of Denver) has good fishing. http://tinyurl.com/7yomrz3
Thats great info. Thanks
You sure don't need to go to Gunnison. Deckers, south of Denver about an hour and a half is a trophy trout stream. In Silverthorne, behind the huge outlet shops, is the most unbelievable fishing for the biggest trout you've seen!! Caught on a tiny shrimp (maybe #24!!)--it is the tailwaters of the dam. Then on up Route 9, the Blue River, which is from Silverthorne to Kremmling is wonderful trout waters. About 5 miles from Silverthorne is a camp ground on the Blue River with great access to the water.
There is an Orvis outfitter in Silverthorne--and in Denver in Cherry Creek.
You might sign up for Groupons because a fly shop has a half price guided day trip fairly often. We have one we're going to do, maybe in May. I'll look for the name. It's on the Platte.
There are lots of places listed on line for Colorado.
OH< and if you want to go to Aspen, the Roaring Fork is just terrific and fun. The access to the streams is SO good in CO
