My spouse and I are planning a trip to Boston around Labor Day and we would also like to spend a few extra days taking some day trips. We'd like to explore Cape Cod, but we're also considering driving north of Boston, into coastal Maine. Are we going to see much of the same type of scenery along Maine's coast as along Cape Cod? Should we choose one or the other, or is it worth it to see both areas? We'd also like to throw some shopping into the itinerary, and we're foodies as well.

Also, could traffic be a deciding factor? Most likely we'd sightsee in Boston over the holiday weekend, and then do the day trip(s) after the holiday.

The Cape might offer more options in all directions once you get there.

Maine might be much more driving north along the coast between sites and then back again to Boston.

The cape and Maine are totally different places. I personally love southern Maine and it is only just over 1 hour to the Maine border from Boston. I go there a lot from Logan Airport. You can get a real feel of rocky coast just going as far as "The Yorks". See www.gatewaytomaine.org.

We live in New England and usually opt for Maine so I haven't been to the Cape in ages. Portsmouth NH area restaurant choices will give you a lot of options plus there's some good sightseeing from historic Strawbery Banke, harbor or inland rivers cruises, and scenic drives (Rt 1B is my favorite). You also have interesting shops to explore. Over the bridge in Kittery ME there is very good outlet shopping, the usual stores plus Kittery Trading Post for outdoor wear. You can take a short drive inland to Lee NH to visit Flag Hill Winery and Distillery (they make vodka). Maybe do some antiquing in Northwood NH. Portland ME's Old Port area also has some fun shopping. We usually have some great weather in September so you might be able to fit in some beach time, too.

I love the Cape but find it really requires an overnight visit but last time we found a resonably priced motel.

I am planning our trip for September right now and plan on doing all three!
