How convenient is the Millennium UN Plaza Hotel to public transportation? It looks as if it is about 5 1/2 blocks to 5th Avenue. Is 44th St. a safe route for two women to walk in early evening or on a Sunday? We are looking for a relatively inexpensive hotel that is clean, convenient, and safe.

The hotel is on 44th between First and Second. Yes, it is a relatively safe area. But, as with any big city you need to just be cognizant of your surroundings.
There are multiple subway lines nearby at Grand Central. For north/south the 4/5/6 train (the green numbers) runs along the East Side. The Grand Central Shuttle can get you over to Times Square where you can connect with multiple other train lines.
I lived about 5 blocks from that area several years back. It can be a bit quiet as there are not a lot of reasons to be walking on First Avenue by the UN at night. The neighborhood is a mix of mostly office buildings with some residential. (Tudor City, a large apartment complex is right there.)
From your hotel all you need to do to get to Grand Central is walk 3 blocks west along 44th. 42nd has a lot of traffic, so if you're more comfortable on a busier street, just walk along.
Remember, you are by the UN and several consulates, so there will usually be NYPD officers in the area.
Also there is the crosstown bus on 42nd, an uptown bus on First Ave and a downtown bus on 2nd Ave.

One of the reasons (imo) the Mill. UN Plaza is so affordable is it's further from a subway station than most other hotels. I think the value is excellent with a somewhat rare rooftop (enclosed) swimming pool and fab views from every room. Using the crosstown bus on 42 st. makes for a shorter walk and yes, it's very safe. If this is for a visit during good weather, i think it's an excellent choice. But if you plan on doing a lot of theater, it may be further from the theater district than you want to be.
What are your dates and budget?
You should realize that the north/south blocks - that is from 42 to 43 and 43 to 44 re short - there are 20 to the mile. the east/west blocks (First Ave to Second, then to Third) - are much longer - about 3 time as long as the N/S blocks. From your hotel it will take about 10 minutes to walk - not lollygag - to Grnd Central, which is the nearest subway. If going much further west I would hop on the 42 St crowwtown bus.
The area is perfectly safe (unless you wander alone down dark alleys at 3am when inebrited) as is any tourist part of NYC.
and yes, part of the reson the hotell is a bargain is that it is so far east.
If a weekend, prices even less expensive. So a good choice.
Oh and there are buses up and down all the avenues (up first and third, down second and lexington) but they will take about 3 or 4 times as long to get anywhere than the subway due to traffic.
Thanks to everyone who replied. We have decided on the Millennium because of your help. Can you give tips about attending the 4th of July Fireworks display? Where is the best place from which to view them? Do people take blankets to sit on?
For viewing the fireworks in Manhattan, if you take a blanket, you won't see a thing and you will likely be trampled. Everyone else will be standing.
Can't offer tips because Macy's hasn't yet posted information about where the barges will be located this year. Usually it has been on the East River, but sometimes--last year, for example--the fireworks were on the Hudson River.
If fireworks are back on the East Side again, best place would be on top floor/roof of your hotel. Or walk over to the East River Drive (1/block) and watch from there.
If on the West Side, best to get wherever on the Hudson River early in the day, pick your spot and stay till dark when the show begins. Bring your own food, wine and scope out nearest cleanest bathrooms (whether por-a-potties or a restaurant or hotel).
Don't bring valuables with, just what you need and keep secure on your body.
Even better, usually, is on the TV.
