Cleveland Park or the West end for DC family spring break
My wife, and kids, age 13 and 10 will be in DC the first week of April for spring break. We have a reservation at the Park Hyatt Washington DC. I think that is in the West End/Foggy Bottom area. We also have the ability to rent a nice town home in Cleveland Park. I am unfamiliar with the area, particularly its proximity to public transit and suitable sites. A town house is preferable becuase of space/bathrooms but I am wondering if people can comment on convenience/safety. Thanks in advance.

Cleveland Park is a very nice neighborhood just a couple of metro stops from "downtown" (e.g. Cleveland Park to Farragut North - WhiteHouse, would be a 6-minute ride) For me, the issue would be how far the townhouse is from the nearest Red Line metro station. There are some very good restaurants in that area -- Indique is one I like.

The Cleveland Park metro station is on the red line which is slightly less convenient than the blue line for getting to many of the museums etc. on the National Mall. But not so much that I'd pass on a nice townhouse in CP which as described above is a very nice neighborhood. "B" on convenience and "A" on safety.

The Park Hyatt is better located in the sense that you can walk from there to many tourist attractions. Cleveland Park is lovely, and does have nice restaurants, but it's a Metro ride (and possibly a transfer) to everything but the zoo. It's not a long ride, and transferring isn't a big deal, but it adds time underground that could be spent better. And you definitely need to make sure the townhouse is an easy walk to the Metro.
Just my two cents. If the townhouse suits your family better, Cleveland Park is a very good choice.

According to the description the townhouse is a 10 minute walk from the Van Ness or Tenleytown stations.
That description would at best put it at the outer bounds of Cleveland Park, if at all. Not the areas around Van Ness or Tenleytown are unsafe -- they aren't at all. They are both leafy residential neighborhoods with generally fewer dining & shopping options than Cleveland Park. They're also one and two stops farther away from the most visited DC sites. I wouldn't necessarily pass on the townhouse but you are trading extra space for a few more minutes on the Metro.

I agree, 10 minutes from those stations is a bit farther out than ideal--obxgirl put it perfectly when she said you're trading space for a bit longer commute time. Can you find a townhouse type thing closer in, on the blu/orange line perhaps?
