Clear Roads From Seattle to Omaha 12-9-16?

I'm traveling from Seattle to Omaha around 12-9-16. How are the roads over the pass on I-90? I'll be ina heavier passenger vehicle - Lincoln Town Car - but I've never crossed the pass in winter with a rear-wheeled car. Any help would be appreciated.

Unless you have a lot of heavy luggage, put 2 or 3 50 lb bags of sand in the trunk.
I would take the extra 45 minutes and go by way of Boise, SLC and Cheyenne WY.
Have someone check the coolant to see what it is good for.
It was -1F in Bend this morning.

Not looking good for Friday at the moment. https://www.wunderground.com/news/sn...-december-2016

It's pretty likely you'll have snow past the Cascades and into the Rockies, too. Make sure you have chains with you.

Leave the sand out of the trunk. The is an old wives tale that does nothing for the vehicle except reduce gas mileage.

Well, the sand actually does help in some vehicles, so it's not necessarily an old wives tale. But I don't think it would be necessary for the OP's.

I think if you hit the pass at the right time, you'll be good. I was going west bound during the snow on Monday and I don't think I would have made it over the pass that night- at least not quickly- so I pulled over for the night in Ellensburg. It was all cleared by the next morning , and I am assuming you're leaving in the morning. I have studded tires, but did not feel safe going over 40 in those conditions. Saw a lot of fishtailing. You will definitely need to carry chains- weather report is looking generally bad in eastern Washington through the weekend.

Having been raised in the area east of that pass you are concerned about and driven IN the winter there I would say getting over the pass could be just the beginning of travel issues, especially if a major storm is brewing.
