Clean One bedroom for $50-$70 a week

Hi, my daughter and I are travelling to New York this coming week unfortunately we have lucked out at staying at her cousins place and friends that I have asked have relatives coming to visit so there is no space to accommodate us. I am looking for a place in Brooklyn for that price but clean and with friendly people, as I cannot afford hotel for a week and food. Also someone who will have a heart in helping us get around; our air fare is already paid for but also looking to not spend to much on buying out dinners as it could get costly. Ideas are welcome to help us stay on budget to as how we can spend on food probably can buy a couple breakfast items and eat at home in the mornings. Would love to get help as time is winding down and need a clean, safe and kind people who will take us in and don't mind taking $50-70.

Thank you all for you help in advance

I thought you were offering to clean a one-bedroom apartment for $50-$70. The idea that somebody would put up two people in NYC and transport them around the city for $7-$10 a day is ludicrous. Surely you jest.

Anyone else I would love if u can help as the first three were useless responses were useless.

You need to talk to the cousins and friends again, beg if you have to. Maybe each has space on the floor and could take you for a couple of nights once they see how desperate you are.
Otherwise asking those cousins and friends if they know anyone who can help you out will probably work better than asking strangers on a chat board.

Try Craigslist. Explain what you have to offer that would make somebody want to put you up for a pittance.

Vina, if you have any luck finding anything for even double that price please let us know and we will rejoice with you. For most of us it's something we simply can't imagine exists. Seriously, do you let strangers stay with you for less than $5 each per night?

Perhaps the Mole People could put you up for the night in the tunnels.

The first 3 responses were NOT useless - they were realistic.

You are essentially asking for charity - for someone to give up their apartment to you for nothing. The price for a bed in a dorm room in a decent hostel is about $50 per night - so $100 for the night for the two of you. Anything less than this in NYC is simply a pipe dream.

Even couchsurfing - and who knows WHO you would be staying with is going to be way more than that (a token $20 per night per person).

Agree that you need to beg your family if they will let you sleep on the floor - or if they have very close friends that will take you in for a couple of nights as a HUGE favor - probably in different places and only for a couple of nights each.

Separately, if you have no money for a hotel I'm concerned that you don;t have the money for food or transit or sightseeing either. Granted there are a number of free things to see/do - but I don't know how to eat for free.

A woman's shelter, possibly? If you are really desperate. It's the only thing I can think of (and honestly, if a stranger offered to let their apartment to you for 10 bucks, I'd be really worried about safety).

Imagine yourself in a great city, New York City.
The year, 1957.
It was a time when you could get a room for fifty bucks a week.
Now, imagine yourself in another dimension.

"Even couchsurfing - and who knows WHO you would be staying with is going to be way more than that (a token $20 per night per person)."

No, couchsurfing is supposed to be free. Well, aside from maybe taking your host out for a meal.

OP - see https://www.couchsurfing.com/

From the site:

"I heard of someone charging for their couch. Is that okay?

No, hospitality on Couchsurfing is free. A host should never ask a guest to pay for their lodging, and a guest should not offer. We do recommend that a guest show their appreciation by cooking a meal, taking the host out, bringing a small gift or offering some other gesture. Hosts should only offer what they are able to offer freely, and say what those things are clearly in the Couch Information in their profile. If there are some things that can’t be offered unless the Couchsurfers agree to share the cost, this should be discussed between the host and surfer (and should never be a requirement for hosting)."

Then perhaps couchsurfing is an option for them if they can find someone who can take 2 people for a week.

@Vina It's not illegal to rent a room in an occupied apartment through AirBnB. Since a lot of people go away during the summer, that's not unrealistic. Search AirBnB, but I really doubt you'll find what you want at that price in Brooklyn or Manhattan (at least the parts that are accessible to public transit). Perhaps Queens or the Bronx. But what everyone has said about price is true. That's unrealistic. You might be able to find a room for $100 a night in a shared apartment.

I just worry about your safety, because you may have problems finding something cheap in a safe neighborhood that's near transit. Before booking, make sure you know exactly how to get to the apartment

In the $100/night ballpark, the Jane (http://www.thejanenyc.com/) has rooms (with shared bath) next week for two for $115, but you have to add tax to that. Very good location, but if the OP can really only afford $100/week it looks like couchsurfing or staying home. Doubt even hostels are that cheap.
