Clean business class hotel near 106th St. and Fifth Ave. NYC, know one?

I'm headed to my first ever business trip to New York City. I've only been to the city a couple of times before, most previously 20 years ago. This is a last minute thing and I'm looking here for help to id a hotel within walking distance to where I'll be working located on Fifth Avenue near 106th Street. I'll be reimbursed for the price of the hotel but I'm in health care, I need to be as modest as possible. Is walking distance, clean and not outrageously expensive possible?

I have not stayed here myself, so I can not make a personal recommendation, but try Upper Yorkville Suites at 3rd near 104th St.

You probably should ask the people where you are working since you are probably not the first or last person they have hired from out of town.

Here's another suggestion. I've never stayed there but this place is real and sort of interesting. I volunteered there during open house new york www.ohny.org - It is a Protestant retreat called House of the Redeemer http://houseoftheredeemer.org/lodging.html

I wouldn't stay at either of those, personally. What does your co. consider "not outrageously expensive"? This is NYC. staythenight.com is on 92 st. just off Fifth ave. and you could either walk or take a bus to the hospital from there and it's a bit better.

You should know though there's not a lot in that immediate area apart from the hospital, apartments, the park and a handful of restaurants. Frankly, I think it's a mistake to feel you need to walk from wherever you're staying to the hospital. You would be much better staying in an area where there are more choice of restaurants and things to do. We do have subways and buses, you know.

Excelsiorhotelny.com is a nice place on the upper west side in an area teeming with restaurants and shops. The Newton Hotel might be even better, also on the upper west side but further north. You can take a crosstown bus through the park from either one. Hopstop.com is a website that will help with directions on public transportation. On the upper east side but further east, the Courtyard Upper Eastside and the Maramara hotel are other options but they're actually less econvenient to get to Fifth ave. than from the upper west side.

Btw, what is a "business class" hotel? If you are expecting business services like a fax machine etc. only the last places I mentioned (Excelsior, Newton, Courtyard UES, Marmara) are likely to have those and you should doublecheck.

It's far from perfect, Sue, but it's a decent budget option in that area. I wouldn't stay there on a business trip though. Last I read, there's no staff who lives on site. If your flight gets delayed and you try to check in late, it can be a real problem.

To the OP, I remembered an older thread here about someone needing a hotel to visit someone at Mt. Sinai. I'm not going to link it since it deals with a lot of side issues, but at that time I also suggested they consider a hotel near Madison Ave. in midtown and then could just take a Madison Ave. bus straight uptown. What are your travel dates and your budget?

That is not an area with a lot (or any) hotels. A couple of B&Bs is about it. This area is hospitals, a couple of museums/libraries and residential.

For a business type hotel you will either have to go farther south or west across the Park.

There is a Marriott on, I think, East 92 - but VERY far east - and inconvenient - since the crosstown buses run on 86th or 96th.

If you give your budget nad dates people may be able to make recos - but I think anything within walking distance would be a fairly long walk.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Upper Yorkville Suites. We found our suite exceptionally clean and accomodating and the management, both professional and responsive. We felt very safe and secure during our stay. We had easy access to transportation and it is a short walk to Central Park. We found plenty of fine food establishments in the surrounding area.

Also, public transportation bus and train is only one block away providing easy access to the city.

Thank you all for your responses. I sent my post before I had been able to contact my manager for my work there. I wished to stay close by as my usual commute is an hour by car, in the country; I love the city and would just have enjoyed something different.

I've been told what you've said, no hotel in the area. I'm ending up staying with the rest of the gang, which makes sense of course, at the Marriott Courtyard on East 92nd Street. Inconvenient per nytraveler but perhaps I'll be sharing a cab to and from.

mclaurie: I didn't know how else to term it, so I decided on business class; one can easily see that I'm a savvy business traveler

The distance from your hotel to Fifth Ave and 106th St is 1.4 miles, about 30 minutes on foot. If the weather is nice, you might enjoy the walk.

sorriso - the Marrott Courtyard is around the block from a fun food place - expensive but almost worth it - Zabar's Vinegar Factory on e. 91st St.
http://www.elizabar.com/zabar/

It's a worth a stop before or after work to pick up treats for your room or lunch.

The hotel is also right around the corner from a lovely park - Carl Schurz Park which goes from E. 90th Street down to E. 84th St. Gracie Mansion, which is ostensibly the Mayor's Residence (just not THIS mayor - he has his own, nicer mansion . . . )

Right now Second Avenue is all dug up because of the cinstruction of a new subway line, but it shouldn't have much effect on your stay.

ellenem: thank you, thank you; I can definitely do that walk.

mp: you answered the unasked question telling me about Zabar's; that is very important information! I also appreciate having another destination for a walk.

I just clicked on the Zabar's link, I've visited it before. I think the show "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" did a segment on their...grilled cheese sandwiches I think. This is so funny, I've watched a few of those shows and it was a grilled cheese sandwich that sent me to the internet. Fabulous!

I live in that area and it's not as inconvenient as it seems. You can get the crosstown bus (That goes across 86th street) between 91st and 90th on York Ave, just around the corner from your hotel. You would get off at Madison Ave and transfer to a bus going up to 106th.
(bus stop is in front of a Williams Sonoma store) Buses are very frequent. (Check to be certain you don't get on a LIMITED bus on Mad Ave.) However, if you have buddies to share the cost a cab would probably be the best option. IF... you can find one in that neighborhood early in the a.m.

Eli's (as we yokels call The Vinegar Factory.... for Eli Zabar) has wonderful food, but the prices would probably send you into cardiac arrest. There's a place in the front of the store to get coffee and pastry, etc. There's a rather new place called Timmy's on the corner of York and 91st... sort of a typical coffee shop, but it might fill the bill. If you want some good food at dinner time check out the York Grill on York near 89th.

Doubt you'll have time to stroll in Carl Schurz Park... but, if you do, I'm sure you'll appreciate it. I just spent the afternoon there! Great people watching, plus Gracie Mansion, the river, etc.

Don't work too hard!

If you can sneak out of work during the day for lunch, visit the Museum of the City of New York, Museo del Barrio and the conservatory gardens.
