Civil War-Franklin/ Smokey Mts.areas

Will be visiting TN the last two weeks in June and would like to see some historical Civil War areas. I think we'll be coming from seeing an uncle in Dyersburg and want to continue to the Smokey Mts. I've read a bit about the places by Franklin. Traveling with two boys ages 12 & 14. How about a nice place to stay in Franklin and Smokey Mts.? Need something with a pool, wouldn't mind a cottage of some sort in Sm. Mt area. Also want to visit Dollywood! Will two boys like it? Loaded ?s I know but I need help. Thanks in advance!!

Not knowing where you are coming from and assuming your coming from Dyersburg to Great Smokies by car the best route would be I-40. Franklin, TN is south of I-40 on I-65 near Nashville over 200 miles from Smokey Mtns., kinda out of the way. Again, assuming you are driving and you have the time might I suggest Chattanooga, TN on your return from the Smokies. While this is out of the way somewhat it does have significant Civil War history and great area for young teens. They should really like Dollywood. My kids had a blast. Some sites that may help, www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/battles/bystate.htm, www.pigeonforgechamber.com/ , http://www.chattanooga-chamber.com/

Annette,
Franklin is an amazing place for Civil war history. The battle of Franklin was devastating to the region and centered around Carter House. Plan to spend a few hours touring Carter House (be sure to do a guided tour) and take plenty of hankies. I have taken many field trips there and cry every time. Also visit Carnton Plantation for another tour. It is very near Carter House. Leave enough time to visit downtown Franklin. Your sons will probably love to eat at Dotson's Cafe (a meat and three endorsed by Martha Stewart). There are numerous places to stay near Franklin, especially in the Cool Springs area. Cool Springs is a large shopping and dining mecca about 2 miles from downtown Franklin. If you have any questions, I will be glad to help.

Thanks for the information. We are actually driving from WI and plan on visiting an uncle in Dyersburg first. Have thought of Chattanooga but husband thinks not. Maybe you can sway his mind, Smokyboy! We will hopefully have 11 days for this driving vacation. Is the weather humid that time of year? Probably not too bad near the MTS. I have read about the Carter House and Carnton Plantation so I hope we do visit the area. I also read about some places near the MTS. My 12 year old is very much into the Civil War era so I'd love to have the boys experience this area.

Locals do not consider June weather too bad; but it will definitely seem humid to you in west and middle TN. Temps will range in the 80's and 90's; and slightly cooler in the mountains. July and August is when the humidity and heat is the worst. T-shirts and shorts for everyone! I have not been to Dollywood; but hear nice things. Kids usually love Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Both are crowded during the summer and full of tourist traps; but lots of fun. The boys will not be bored on this trip.

The battle of Chattanooga was rich in Civil War history; one of the Unions greatest victorys according to Lincoln. The area is also rich in touristy attractions. Along the same lines of Dollywood/Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg you have Rock City and Ruby Falls. Sooooo touristy and soooo much schlock!! Our kids and us absolutely loved all these places! Will this sway your husband annette!? Where and whatever you decide I'm positive you all will have lots of fun. Great road trip area of the U.S.
