Christmas Trip with Kids
Hope you can help?
I'm busily searching through old posts for some inspiration but would love to know your recommendations on where to take our 3 children aged 3, 5 & 7yrs when we're in NYC on 26 Dec.
We'd also like your help on where to stay - ideally we'd like to be located near Rockefella Center if possible so would need a room which would accomodate all 5 of us. Also are there any areas we should avoid, safety wise?
Also suggestions on kid friendly restaurants would come in real handy.
Many thanks
Lisa

At that age, the Children's Museum of Manhattan on the upper west side (I'm assuming it's still there, it's been a while), museum of natural history (probably best for the 7 yr old), toys r us in times sq, FAO Shwartz (I used to tell my kids it was a toy museum so we can't buy anything, they saw through that one quickly!) and the playgrounds in Central Park & other parks (if the weather is decent). My kids always liked the Forbes Gallery (on 5th Av baer 13th St), we live nearby and have gone often.
As far as restaurants, most Chinese, many Italian (not the really fancy ones, but the moderate 'red sauce' places), America on 18th St near 5th Av (weekend lunch/brunch is great for kids, strolling magicians and balloon artists, lost of room, lots of kids), Odeon (used to have a kids menu, don't know if they still do), EJ's Luncheonette (a few locations), John's Pizza (midtown and G. Village), almost any coffee shop or deli (I always liked the way the waitresses at 2nd av deli treated kids), Tennesse Mountain, and Dallas BBQ. These are predominantly downtown (just becase that's where I live), other neighborhoods will also have similar palces.

Just about all major hotel areas are safe. I don't know anything in particular near Rock. Ctr. but suite type hotels may work for you (Shelburne, Doubletree, Avalon to name a few that I know are good).

Don't forget to go to Serendipity for an awesome ice cream sundae. Also Dylan's candy shop near Bloomingdales is an experience.
There's a beautiful Carousel in Central Park. Can't remember if it's open all year though, but skating in the Wollman ice rink in the park would be fun.

Buy yourself a book on NYC with kids and there is also a guide to central Park that we have found neat things to do in. These books/maps will be handy while you are there so you don't waste time getting lost since there is so much to go!
I agree with the Children's Museum suggestion (Upper West Side), Museum of Natural History (can get so crowded in the afternoon during vacation time so go early), watching skaters at Rockfeller Center, Statue of Balto in Central park, the playgrounds, the zoo in Central Park, Wollman Rink in the park for skating- for all of these dressed warmly of course!, ToysRUS Times Square- go early and get tickets to the ferris wheeel, lunch at ESPN Zone in Times Square if you have sports fanatics, Dylans candy store, Serendipity for ice cream, Johns for pizza, Gabriella's for Mexican food. There are so many great things to do you will have a great time!!!
