My wife and I will be visiting SF along with our 3 & 9 yr old boys, from Christmas through New Year's, and plan to stay in one of the hotels in 4th street/Union Sq area. Will appreciate any suggestions on sights/activities for that time of the year. How cold should we expect it to get (we are from NY/CT) ? Thanks

It won't be as cold as NY/CT! I will likely be in the low- to mid-50s during the day. It might be raining or it might not.
Your kids are the perfect age for the Exploratorium --

The Academy of Sciences and especially the dinosaur exhibit will delight them.
It will not be as cold as NY/CT(I am wanting your weather here now). It may well rain as it often does.
You can also take a walk out Crissy Field way and see the Golden Gate bridge. It's a beautiful walk. Bundle up.
See if you can find the book about what to do with kids by the Bay. It's paperback and I don't know the esact title.
Check Barnes and Noble.
Sometimes~there is the first walk on NY Eve in the Crissy Field area. It's fun and the route is lit by lanterns.
If you are planning on Dim Sum on Christams Day reserve early and know Yank Sing is always packed to the gills.
