We were there at Thanksgiving and they had not yet set up Christmas decorations, although the shops were already selling Christmas things.

But remember, in Williamsburg it isn't so much a matter of lights and decorations, since all lighting is candle-power at night!

The Grand Illumination is the first Sunday night in December I believe. It is not to be missed. It will, however, be extremely crowded. Plan on getting there late afternoon to park. It is a great time. There are fireworks and music.

Come to MY neighborhood! The damn lights are up everywhere already (it's only Nov 18 people!) and one of the radio stations is already Christmas music 24/7. Give me a break!

The Grand Illumination is on the eighth this year since Thanksgiving is so late.

Thanksgiving is late? What does THAT have to do with it? Christmas has steamrolled right over Thanksgiving in the U.S., nobody even MENTIONS the Pilgrims anymore. Thanksgiving is just the day before the big sales.

While not the same thing as you'll see strolling through Colonial Williamsburg, there are Christmas light displays at both Newport News City Park, and on the Virginia Beach boardwalk. There is a charge (per car) to drive through. The VB boardwalk is closed to pedestrians at night during the display, so you can't use the most ecomical & environmentally friendly way to see them.
