Christmas in New Orleans and Hotel ?
We are taking a cruise out of NO on 12/27. We'll be arriving on 12/25!
Also, what is the best place to stay? What is a safe area that is near stuff to do?
What is there to do on the 25th and 26th?

I mostly stay in the CBD, but staying in the Quarter is more convenient in my opinion. I like the Holiday Inn on Royal, have stayed at the Marriott, Sheriton, La Quinta (closed for renovations??) Chatau Dupre, Hilton, W.
It's a great city.
Do your homework and decide what you wish to do and what is open. Then firm up your plans.

On Christmas, most New Orleanians will be doing what all Americans do, opening presents and having their Christmas dinner.
You may find that many of the famous restaurants are closed on Christmas Day so please call ahead.
Celebration in the Oaks occurs, but not on the 25th. Frankly, there's not a whole lot to do on the 25th. Perhaps walk around the French Quarter to see what the Quarter looks like when it's quiet?
On the 26th, go to Celebration in the Oaks (http://celebrationintheoaks.com/)
Now if you were there a week later for New Year's, then the list of possibilities would be endless.

As far as where to stay, stay in the French Quarter. Rates are greatly reduced in December, and the Quarter is the best and safest part of town.
I'd recommend staying at the Monteleone and experience a true New Orleanian hotel.
