Chicago Trip end of June - Suggestions please!
Dear Fodorites,
I am traveling with my 40-something girlfriends and my husband to Chicago for a weekend (a first for some of us). We are celebrating my birthday and then I'm staying with my husband for the week to do some sightseeing. We'll be in the North River for the weekend and the Loop for the week. I would love your suggestions for the following:
- Birthday dinner on Sat night. Mid priced, North Michigan/Magnificent Mile/North River. We are a combination sophisticated down to earth bunch who enjoy inviting places, fun bar scene for after dinner. American or Italian, most would lean to ordering fish/seafood.
- bar lounge/bit of dancing after
- after shopping for a bite and pre-drinks - great patio or bistro/cafe type place same areas.
- recommended bus city tour
- 1 great jazz lounge and 1 great blues bar in the North River or Loop on a Monday or Tuesday night
- romantic steakhouse, nice views
All suggestions are welcome and greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
VMinTO

Gibson's Steakhouse on North Rush St. Not romantic per se but a very original Chicago experience and one of the best steakhouses in the world.
http://www.signatureroom.com/Signature-Lounge/, must do on a clear evening. Enjoy a drink and have wonderful view of the city.
Blue Chicago on Clark
Green Mill, uptown

Actually, river tours are probably more popular than bus tours. The best are run by the Chicago Architecture Foundation. Check www.architecture.org.
The Chicago Cut Steakhouse at 300 N LaSalle is relatively new and overlooks the river. I haven't been but heard good things.
You can also check for events, clubs and restaurants on your own at www.chicagoreader.com or www.chicagomag.com. You can find restaurants by neighborhood, price or cuisine.
For transit info, check www.transitchicago.com. It has maps, a trip planner and how to track trains and buses on your smart phone.
For other info, www.choosechicago.com or www.explorechicago.org.

Italian dining in or near River North, all very good: Volare on the east side of Michigan Ave, behind the Tribune Tower is very good, has outside dining as well. Also, in River North, west side, Coco Pazzo or east of Michigan Ave, in Streeterville, nearby, Cafe Coco Pazzo. Shaw's Crab HOuse for seafood in River North.
If you get on a bus tour, you'll sit in traffic. Take the Architectural Foundations's River Boat Tour.Spend some time in Millenium Park including a visit to the Art Institute. Have lunch there at Terzo Piano.
