Chicago transit from Southeast area to Union Station?
We want to drive from Ann Arbor to a train station in the southeast suburbs of Chicago, where we can park our car for three days and take a train or bus into the city.
Can someone suggest a good southeast train station with safe parking? We want to go directly to Union Station or even the Michigan Ave. downtown area if possible. Thanks for any help.

The NICTD (South Shore Line) has parking available at most stations, but does not encourage overnight parking at any of them. www.nictd.com/policies.html
Trains end at Millennium Station at Randolph and Michigan. You could easily walk or catch a cab to several hotels from Millennium Station. If you take Amtrak, you'd end at Union Station.

The authors of these two reviews on Yelp suggest that Michigan City, IN, is a good place to catch the South Shore into Millennium Station. If you're concerned about leaving your car there for 3 days call the local police dept. parking enforcement division and ask if they think it's okay -- or call/email the South Shore rail service.

You can pull up Michigan City on a google map, zoom in, use street view and see the parking lot (there's a blue train station icon designating the station). I see there's also an Amtrak station not far north of there, a train from there would take you into Union Station.

There are 3 Wolverine (Amtrak) trains per day each way from Ann Arbor to Chicago. The early (7AM) train is the most expensive $55pp standard fare. The return trains are $32pp. If you got someone to drop you off at the Ann Arbor Amtrak station, you would not have to worry about coming back to your car to find bullet holes in it.

Thanks to everyone who replied! I will look at the yelp reviews and the underground parking. Super help as usual from Fodor folk! Thanks again!
tomfuller - I should have said we live in Ann Arbor, and have had too many bad experiences with Amtrak - delays of 2-3 hours each way is typical. So we were hoping to drive far enough and then take public transport in the city. Thanks for the reply.
