Chicago: Loop or Magnificent Mile area with no car?

Please let me know what's the best location to look for a hotel in Chicago with Hotwire if we don't plan to rent a car and we would like to be in a safe location, close to the major attractions (4 nights in May)? Thanks.

Either one is fine for your stated purposes. For shopping and nightlife I would lean toward Mag Mile. For the museums, the Loop.

You don't want a car in downtown Chicago anyway - it's a liability. Using Hotwire, I try to get the Magnificent Mile/Streeterville area. I got the Hyatt on East Wacker once and the Westin on Clark once and was pleased with both. Assuming you're in decent shape with no mobility problems, the area is walking distance to the Magnificent Mile, Millennium Park and the Art Institute, and shopping and theater in the Loop. Also convenient to el and buses.

As previous posters say, the Mag Mile/River North area has a greater concentration of restaurants and things to do later in the eve. The Loop has a larger concentration of offices so tends to be a bit more quiet in the evenings.

That said, The Loop is also where all the major theatres are. The two areas are adjacent and transportation is abundant. The Mag Mile is on the north bank of the river and The Loop is on the south. To walk between the farthest points of both neighborhoods is only about 1.5 miles.

If you were to rent a car, in addition to paying your rental fees, most hotels charge around $50 per day for parking. I'm sure you can find much better uses for $200 than to give to a hotel garage.

Thanks a lot for the quick and helpful replies.I used Hotwire and got a room at Club Quarters (Wacker at Michigan)for $69/night. It has good reviews on TripAdvisor.
