Can any of you knowlegable Chicago experts advise me about which of these two hotels I should stay at when I visit Chicago in October. I have great rates at both. Marriott at 540 Mich. Ave. for $199. per night and Allerton Crown at 701 Mich. Ave. for 189. per night. What's the best hotel, location etc. Appreciate your help.

540 and 701 Michigan are within hollering distance of each other, so I don't think you can distinguish between them on the basis of location. The Allerton Crown is I think a total remodel of the old Allerton, and from the outside looks to be still in the construction stage. I've never liked the Marriott because the rooms are pretty small. You might want to try the Wyndham, just opened at St. Clair and Erie (a block off Michigan at 600 north) or further north the Raphael, a smaller property east of Michigan in the neighborhood of Water Tower Place, is nice. Other good hotels are on "the new east side," further east of Michigan and closer to the river, including the Hyatt Regency, the Sheraton, the Fairmont and the Swiss Grand. There is also a Holiday Inn in that area.
I just got back from a trip to Chicago and stayed at the Marriott there. I did not find my room small at all and I was in a standard room with a king bed. The hotel was centrally located so I could walk to just about everything I wanted to see. I would stay at the Marriott if I go back there.
