Cheap motel on I-90 W near Portage, LaPorte or Hammond IN
We (2 adults and 2 children) need a place to stay overnight on our way from Buffalo NY to Colorado end of July. Anyone knows where we can stay somewhere near Portage, or LaPorte or Hammond, IN. We don't mind to travel another 10-15 min after thruway exit. Thank you.

Your best choice would probably be Merrillville, IN. Take I-65 south from I-80/90 about 5 miles to exit 253. There is a Residence Inn, Hampton Inn, Fairfield Inn & Suites, Holiday Inn Express and Candlewood Suites. The Residence, Fairfield and Candlewood would give you a bit of extra space. The HI Express, Residence and Fairfield include breakfast where the the Residence and Candlewood would have a kitchenette in the room. There is a large shopping mall, supermarket and several restaurants just east of I-65.
Be advised that there is lots of construction around the I-80/I-65 junction, so it may be slow going.
