We need more informaton. What do you consider "cheap" and "affordable"?
When are you coming - rates vary tremendously by time of year?
And what do you consider "cheap" - a specific amount in $ please. (NY is never cheap - but depending on where you come from the prices might not seem too bad in comparison.)
Also it would help to know where this "business" is - to determine what part of the city it would be most convenient for you to stay?

There aren't really any decent "cheap" hotels in NYC, but if you are coming for business, there are some cheaper options if you can tell us your budget. If your business is in Manhattan, I'd stay there. It really makes no sense to stay in New Jersey, though there are some decent hotels in Long Island City (Queens) that are close to Manhattan and always go for under $200 per night.

Honestly, no one is going to stay in a shared-room hostel on a business trip. There are some cheap hotels in NYC, though few in Manhattan. This time of the year, about the best you can do is $249 per night at the Pod Hotel (one of the tiny bunk bed rooms) or the Yotel, but at least that would have a private bath. There are a handful of other choices, but getting something under $200 means going to the outer boroughs.
Also, I should add ... prices are going up, and the longer the OP waits to make a reservation (particularly for a trip this fall), the higher the prices and less likely she will be to find a cheaper hotel room in Manhattan. I was looking for friends this weekend, and I found a couple of cheaper rooms earlier in the week. By Thursday, those rooms will all be gone, and my favorite cheaper hotels in Queens were already booked full over a week ago.
