Charleston SC Hotel

Hi, we are planning to visit Charleston Oct 11-15 to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We are not planning to have a car and want to stay in the historic district. We love to eat, love history, and this is our first visit to the Low Country. We want to do a tour or two, a cooking class, great restaurants, good drinks, and anything else that is a "must see."

I am looking for a hotel or even a nice B&B in the area. We don't want to spend more than $200-$250/night. I'm having a hard time finding something that I like in that range. Any suggestions or any hotels that are worth the little bit more?

Thank you, and feel free to post "must sees" or restaurant/tour recommendations also.

From a trip report last yesr . .

On our way home from Delaware, we spent one nite in Charleston . . Waht a great place! We stayed in the Historic District at The Indigo Inn, Jasmin House annex. Really nice room with a great courtyard in the common area.

Had dinner at the Amen Street Raw Bar. Fabulous meal and wine. Then took Pedicab (rickshaw) cab ride around town to battery and historic district. Had him take us to Fresh Berries for frozen no sugar added yogurt (best ever according to the chief critic) then back to hotel. Now sitting in courtyard at hotel unlaxing. Nice end to a great vacation.

It's a shame we had only one nite . . will definately be comming back! Charleston is a lot like NOLA but without the filth and decadence. The headline in the morning paper was about some joker who was arrested for walking around with a open container (beer can ) . . Imagine that even being noticed in NOLA!! I thnk this is going to be a regular visit for us!!

I always recommend a carriage tour first thing so you can get your bearings. I also enjoyed the Gullah tour and Ed Grimball's Walking tour. Charleston Cooks, a cooking store on East Bay Street has cooking classes and my friend say they're great. You can drink wine while you learn.I just plugged your dates into kayak.com. The Mills House came up for $204. It's a nice place right in the middle of the HD.

There are tons of great restaurants. Read through some of the threads here and you'll get lots of ideas. My current favorite is FIG.

Check out the Planters Inn - rooms should be in your budget range - we stayed there last year. This Relais & Chateau hotel has very nice well appointed & comfortable rooms, excellent staff and is located right in the heart of the Historic District on Market Street - walking distance to numerous shops and restaurants. We enjoyed our stay there very much.

We stayed at the Vendue in the historic district. The annex across the street has the best rooms and is quieter. The rooftop bar has a lively scene at night, less so during the day. Enjoyed both the room and location. It's been 3 years but our room was under $200.

One of my Top 5 US cities.

The Doubletree Suites is at the heart of downtown. You will swear it is a historic hotel but it has suite style rooms. You will be staying long enough that you will appreciate having a fridge and a little more space.

Any of the above hotel choices would be good. Should not be a problem this far out finding a good hotel in your price range unless you're looking for something very high end.

We were in Charleston the very beginning of May of this year and stayed at the Andrew Pinckney Inn.

I couldn't recommend it more. It's right around the corner from Hank's (great seafood) and a few minutes walk to Fleet landing (also very good food).

It's located a couple of blocks above Broad.

Your dates cames up at 225. and it includes breakfast on the terrace.

THANK YOU for all the great replies! All of these hotels were ones that we had looked at staying -- I think I may wait a little closer until our travel time and choose the best rates since all were good experiences.

We are very excited about our trip!
