Charleston, SC

We are going to Charleston for 4 days In April and are gathering recommendations for fine dining in Charleston and vicinity. We have wide ranging tastes and are interested in a wide variety of cusines. We are flexible with regards to cost but if we have to make a choice prefer good cooking to ambiance. All suggestions and experiences would be appreciated.

Paul: Here are some culinary memories from my trip to Charleston.
She-crab soup and blue crab cakes sauteed with pecans in the Barbadoes Room at the Mills House Hotel.
Fried alligator with black bean sauce and tomato salsa, and grilled tuna with pineapple sauce at 82 Queen.
Brown shrimp over rice at Poogan's Porch.
Pizza at Bocci's.
Bon appetit!

We liked Anson's and also Carolina's. Both were
very attractive and offered well prepared & presented dishes.
April is when the private gardens are open but
advance tickets are required. Contact chamber of Commerce for details. It is a wonderful opportunity
to see things usually not possible. Middleton
Place is fabulous as the azaleas are in full bloom
then. The restaurant at the plantation is very
good.

Charleston is a wonderful city! Favorite places to eat include Carolina's , Magnolias, Fulton Five and Celias. There are several casual places on King street that are good for lunch- old Town for Greek food and a place I think called the City Bakery for brunch.

The Library at Vendue has fantastic food and a great atmosphere. We stayed in the Vendue Inn and after our first night of room service, we didn't want to eat anywhere else. The hotel has a rooftop bar with a view of the Cooper River and the church steeples of Charleston. The elevator even has a luxurious velvet sofa in it. We felt pampered.
