Charleston, Outer Banks, Savannah?

Is this too much in 9 days, including the drive to and from DC? This would be near the end of April. We like to drive, but don't want to spend the entire week in the car.

So if you had to leave out one of these spots, which would it be? We're looking to relax, but we also like to walk around and see the sights.

Ann, Personally, I don't think this is too much for nine days--so I'd be inclined not to eliminate any of them.

If I had to leave out one, though, it'd be Savannah--it's the southernmost place of the three, so it'll reduce your driving time a little. Savannah's historic area is nice to walk/drive around, but I prefer the Outer Banks and especially Charleston. You might consider replacing Savannah with someplace like Beaufort, SC, also.

Just my humble opinion, of course. You'll have a nice time in any of these places.

Don, Beaufort is only an hour north of Savannah so you aren't eliminating much driving. Beaufort is cute but it's historic district is miniscule in comparison to Savannah's.

I agree with you though, you can probably do all. Savannah can be done well in 2 days, Charleston 3, leaving the remainder for driving and the Outter Banks.

Sorry to be the first to say, yes - too much! - but I will. I love all three places! BUT I would just spend the week in Charleston & Savannah, and save Outer Banks for another trip! You will spend too much time in the car, and only skim each place if you try to do all three. Have a wonderful trip!

I agree Lani. I think the drive from the Outer Banks to Charleston would be way too long! You will be in the car more than you'll be at any of your destinations. I'd drive from DC to Charleston, spend a few days, then (if you must) go to Savannah. If your looking to relax. I'd stay in Charleston for the week, and use the weekends to drive, and rest up for your return to work.

I agree you have time to do it all.
Try driving from DC to Norfolk and then down to the Northern End of the Outer Banks (Corolla, Duck). Spend some time in the Nags Head area. (Wright Bros Monument, etc.). Head down to Cape Hatteras and maybe stay down there 1 night. Take the ferry over to Ocracoke and stay there one night. Take the ferry South to Swan Quarter (I think) and go down the coast towards Wilmington. South from there on US 17 to Myrtle Beach and Charleston. There is a great place to stop near Georgetown (Brookgreen Gardens).
Spend several days in Charleston. You could even base yourself there and do "day trips" to Savannah and Beaufort (I agree you should see Beaufort--it's where Prince of Tides, The Big Chill, The Great Santini, and other movies were filmed--also near Parris Island).
From there (Chas or Savannah) take I 95 back to DC. You can get from Savannah all the way to DC in a day.
(To really put and end to your trip, spend a night at South of the Border. You won't believe that place.)
Except for the first and last days the travel times driving are not great so would not be an exhausting trip. It will be pretty then and not crowded.

John, are you joking? Are you really recommending that Ann stay at South of the Border?

I do agree that Ann would enjoy Brookgreen Gardens. It's the country's largest landscaped sculpture garden (with over 500 pieces of American sculpture) on the the ruins of a plantation.

Across the street is Huntinton Beach State Park, which has a freshwater lagoon, a salt marsh and dune-protected beach. Birdwatchers love this place.

Atalaya, the palacial home of American sculptress Anna Hyatt Huntington, is also in the park.

It's on U.S.17 South between Pawleys Island and Murrells Inlet, about 20-30 minutes south of Myrtle Beach.

Thanks for all of the information. Don't know what to do with it all yet, but have a few months to sort it all out!

And I have been to South of the Border (of course--even have a picture of me with that giant statue out front). It would be like not stopping at Wall Drug. Un-American. However, I may have to draw the line at staying there. I've done my time at motels like that. Now I'm old (32) and want my swanky hotels and inns.

I'm not sure about the logistics of the travel, but from a plain: "Where would I like to go from the list of Savannah, Charleston, and Outer Banks?"

I'd choose Charleston and Outer Banks. I went to Savannah last year and was suprised at how dead it was. In my opinion the city was over hyped. It was nice, but Charleston was really a great city.
