Charleston area for three days??
My husband and I will fly to Charlotte, NC early in October to see family. Then we have three nights to go off somewhere by ourselves. We thought Charleston would be the best choice as it is fairly close and has a vaiety of activities. We LOVE to be on a beach.. Which beach or two might be best for us to stay at (we are in our late 50s) that we could drive away to go see other sights of Charleston? Also any ideas of where to stay on the beach that would be reasonable cost? We're open to any ideas. Thanks!

If you want an upscale experience stay at Wild Dunes on Isles of Palms - Gated community in secluded area, great beach, lots of onsite amenities. It's about a 20 minute drive from downtown Charleston and convenient to all area tourist attractions. We just got back from Charleston and had a wonderful - there are all sorts of things to do and see.

I am thinking that Wild Dunes is more expensive than we would want. Are there other beach accomodations that are more in the range of $100-$125 per night that are also located in a good area and have a beautiful beach?

I'd suggest Pawley's/Litchfield if there isn't anything at Folly, etc. Beautiful beach, and wonderful in October. Look at Litchfield Golf and Beach Resort. NOT MB, please. Charleston for a day would be very doable. The food up around Litchfield is equally as good, I would add. There is also Brookgreen Gardens, a beautiful site with incredible art and sculptures done by ___Huntington. It is unique, truly.

For your purposes and within your budget, I think Holiday Inn at Folly would work. Litchfield is significantly more expensive, and while charming, it's not Charleston. The others you mention are generally all condos or villas and while you may be able to find a three night rental in off season within your budget, they probably won't be at water's edge.
You could consider a B&B in Mt. Pleasant, which would give you easy access to Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island Beaches as well as a short trip and easy trip downtown, but won't be beachfront.

There is a hotel on Kiawah but it's fancy. Edisto has a timeshare condo place. It's very quiet there, but's about an hour away from Charleston. Folly, IOP, and Sullivan's are closer.
The Sea Cabins on IOP are nice and probably within your budget.
