I'm planning a last minute trip to Newport this weekend or next. Since the hotel we'll be staying in doesn't include breakfast, I'd appreciate suggestions on where to pick up some good breakfasts. Both takeout (great bakery/cpffee/tea?) or sitdown suggestions welcome. Also, I'm interested in any casual restaurants or takeout (gourmet salads and sandwiches,preferably vegetarian choices)for lunch.

For locals, we like "The Market" a gourmet shop on Memorial (www.newportgourmet.com) that has groceries, deli, and bakery. A great place to pick up lunch (you can eat in as well but only has a few tables). They also have a wide variety of salads and dinner items for take-out. In the off-season they have a nightly blue-plate special for dinner. Main dish and two sides for under $7.00.

Definitely second the recommendation for the Market. Some of the best sandwiches I've ever had, actually. For breakfast, Annie's is great, and we love to go to Zelda and sit at the bar for Sunday breakfast, reading the paper--they make a mean Bloody Mary, too. I like Boulangerie Obelisk on Spring St. for coffee, pastries, and snacks.

Any more ideas from you and others? I'm really trying to have a low key weekend and don't want to blow the budget on heavy and/or high priced meals (I don't eat like that at home, so why change when I'm out of town, right?)

Also, any interesting Asian restaurants in the area, especially Thai or Vietnamese?

one more thing--do you know anything about the "Taste of Newport" that's supposed to be on this Sunday? Is it held rain or shine? WIll it sub for a nice lunch?

Actually, there is a good Thai restaurant on Thames Street, pretty far down. Glad you reminded me of it! The place just opened this past summer and we had a few meals there and really enjoyed them. Not expensive.

From another Newport native:

A good place to go for breakfast is Norey's on Lower Broadway, between Pop and the Salvation Cafe. Also try Gary's on Lower Thames, across from IYRS (like the flower), even though summer weekend lines can get long there. Another good spot is the Franklin Spa on the corner of Spring & Franklin Streets.

The other suggestions are on the mark, too. I'm sure we've all given you enough breakfast spots for a year!
