Four Dominican couples and a child are planning to spend a couple of days of Christmas in New York and one week in a place where we can find a convenient cottage. WE NEED SOME HELP to identify this last place. We don't want to be completly isolated and prefer something relatively close to a city so we can commute easy. We heard about Poconos and the Castkil region, but it doesn't have to be at the mountain. Please help, don't be afraid to be place specific.
Greetings from the Dominican Republic.
Domingo.
Castkil or Poconos, What would you pick?

Both areas have lovely mountain scenery, and your chances of snow are about the same in both.
Catskills are a little more isolated and remote, with smaller hotels; Poconos have some really big resort properties and some larger towns nearby. Both places would have cabins for rent, but I am not familiar with the possibilities.
The Poconos are a little closer to NYC than the Catskills (Kinston/Catskills about 2 hrs away, Stroudburg/Poconos about 1.5 hours away) , and there is probably more to do in the Poconos area at Christmas time.
Keep in mind most of these places assume people have cars, so unless you stay some place right in a town or are planning to rent a van, you will have a problem. Here's the website for the NY State tourism board which might have more info to help you.

I have to attend an event in the Poconos every year at the Split Rock Resort in Lake Harmony. We do not stay on site because we don't like the accomodations. It seems to be catering more to families so there's a noisy arcade area, etc. We thought the property was in poor shape and after one abominable meal we never ate in the restaurant again. The restaurants in the area are decent but few and far between. You will find cottages to rent in this area that will be much better although there doesn't seem like a lot to do. We've seen a small ski slope but hardly anything we would consider a mountain. You would definitely need a car. Years ago the Poconos used to be popular with honeymooners but I think that time is long past. Check the distance from NYC, it must be several hours which might be a longer commute than you want to consider. Sorry I have nothing good to recommend in that area.
