carter's grove closing
I visited Williamsburg this weekend and was surprised to find Carter's Grove "closed for the season." Does anyone know what is going on there? In checking around online it appears it's been closed for years! Its closure should be better publicized in and around Williamsburg so folks don't make the drive down there for naught.
One pleasant result of this disappointment was an unplanned visit to the grounds of Westover plantation. What a magnificent spot!! And we met the owner -- a most gracious, unassuming gentleman who could not have been more welcoming or engaging. He was walking around the grounds doing chores much like any of us would, except that has was caring for a stunning Georgian brick manor house perched on the riverbanks. For $2, it was one of the most memorable moments of our trip to Williamsburg.

Rumor within the museum world is that it is unlikely Carter's Grove, Martin's Hundred or the Archaeological Museum on the grounds will ever open in their former capacity. CW has kept it fairly quiet as they are exploring a number of uses for the property, including divesting it.

I think it's gone way beyond rumor to fact that Colonial Williamsburg has permanently closed Carter's Grove and is actively seeking a buyer for the property. The local paper reported not long ago that they were hoping someone would be interested in making it a corporate retreat with guarantees for conservation easements for the most historic bits.
It's a bloody shame CW is hawking a piece of history for a short term cash infusion. Especially since the history & archeology of the ill fated Martins Hundred site coincides with the celebration of Jamestown's 400th birthday in 2007.

Carter's Grove has been closed for a long time, for 2 major reasons I've been told.
First, it was losing money.
Second, the "powers-that-be" at Colonial Williamsburg are, shall we say, not in agreement regarding it's place in the grand scheme of things. CW attempts to faithfully re-create pre-Revolution 1770's Virginia, and Carter's Grove did not fit that plan.
